QTVR not working for me...

Post by tvalleau »

... and apparently I'm the only one, eh? The other demo, and the axis numbers are working fine, but qtvr simply won't respond. 10.4.9 PPC Quad (and yes, the machine has been rebooted.)

TIA

A few things to do and check out:

1. Which version of 3DxMacWare are you using?

2. verify the 3DxQuickTime.component is installed in /Library/QuickTime

3. please report the 3DxQuickTime.component version. You can do that with the Finder, selecting the component and selecting "Get Info". The version number is in the pop up alert. Or you can see it directly in column view.

4. Also, see if some error messages pop up in the Console:
- open Console.app inside /Applications/Utilities
- select from the menubar: Edit -> Clear Display
- launch the demo
then please copy and paste here the console output. Thanks.

Thanks for your prompt help! :-)

Version: 1.02
QT component: 1.02
console log: remains empty.

status the same: two of the demos work fine; QTVR has no response at all.

System log; crash log are clean. it's as if something on my system is "firewalling" QTVR only. Next, I'll try unplugging USB devices... unless someone has a better idea.

HMMM do you suppose it's because I'm using a Kensington trackball + their Mouseworks software? (& yes, QTVR works fine with it)

Thanks for the information.
From what I can tell it looks like our component is not being loaded when you open the movie file. That's clearly a bug.

Let's see, do you have more QTVR movies to try out? Try loading those and keep an eye on the Console log. If something like "3Dconnexion device init OK" gets written, it means the plugin was loaded and it should work with all movies.

Other than that, let me think a bit more about what could be the problem of not loading it in the first place.

I forgot:
try opening the QuickTime Player by itself before opening the actual movie, i.e. clicking on its dock icon or double-clicking the app itself ( /Applications/QuickTime Player.app ).

Well, this is interesting.

If I run a different QTVR first (an old one from 2003) that one works fine.

Next I go to your demo QTVR and try it. It works. (Whee!)

Here's the interesting part:

Next I run your box demo. It works.

Go back to your QTVR demo.... and it doesn't work!

Back to the top: run my old QTVR, (works); followed by your QTVR (works); box (works); your QTVR (doesn't work) etc etc.

I can't reproduce this problem.

Just curious: did you ever shut down the QuickTime app in this process?

Could it be some other QuickTime plugin interfering? Can you list all the plugins you have installed in your system? Please list all files under /Library/QuickTime and under <your>/Library/QuickTime... or type in Terminal.app the following lines:

ls -la /Library/QuickTime
ls -la ~/Library/QuickTime

Where are these located? in /Library/QuickTime or ~/Library/QuickTime ?

now, if you want, you can try doing this, as an attempt to corner the issue.

- Move (do not delete!) the other components/plugins in a safe location and leave only the 3DxQuickTime component inside /Library/QuickTime.
- See if it works in your workflow or anything that's different from before.
- Restore your original settings by moving your other QuickTime plugins back into /Library/QuickTime.

Thanks.

Well, here's the results, and I'm afraid you're not going to be pleased with them: it appears to be your movie.

I removed all the QT extensions (plugins) and rebooted. Nope: same thing - yours won't run unless I click on another one first. Quitting QuickTime is sufficient to invoke this issue. Double click on your deqfreestyle movie, which launches QT player... your controller doesn't work. Click on another qtvr, (it works) then click back to freestyle... and freestyle works.

quit QTP. Double click on your deqfreestyle movie, which launches QT player... your controller doesn't work. etc etc.

So: I went out to the web, and downloaded 6 other QTVR movies from various places.

Quit QTP. Double click any given movie... it works just fine. In fact, the only movie I can find (so far) that -doesn't- work is your demo.

thanks a lot for your detailed feedback.

If it works on every other QTVR movie except *that* one, hey that's actually good news. We will work on solving the issue on the demo movie. Main problem is that we can't reproduce it here. Don't hesitate to let me know if you find other movies that do not work with our devices.

If you are a QTVR author (or QuickTime expert) and feel like doing more researches: did you notice any differences in the encoding or compression format or anything else relevant between the movies you downloaded and our demo?

Actually, I am a long-time QT developer...

I believe that it’s the default settings of “Pano2QTVR pro” which was used to make the movie.

I went to their website, www.pano2qtvr.com and discovered that -none- of their sample QTVR -cubics- will work properly, although their simple panoramas do.

So it’s something that they are doing with cubics.

OK... that’s all the time you get from me for free! :-)

Let me know, please, of any progress.

Cordially,

Tracy

I just got my SpaceNavigator from Amazon (Japan) today, and I'm getting the exact same thing as tvalleau -- the QTVR movie works if I go to another QTVR movie first, but not right off.

Just to let you know it's not just one person running into this! :)
