Hi pengwinzz2
Please activate the update wizard and test the device again in Maya 8.5 as it have to work.
At the moment there is no beta release available, the only stable release which is available is the 3DxSoftware v3.3.6. And this release supports Maya 8.5 on Windows XP (both 32 and 64 bit) with SP2.

Hi pengwinzz3
Please read the following file: "Start -> All Files -> 3Dconnexion -> 3Dconnexion Plug-In for Maya 8.5 -> Readme". This is a simple text file describing how to install the plug-in.
You should perform a search for 3DxMaya.mll on the partition whereto you installed 3DxSoftware as well.

Where can I get drivers that work with maya 8.5
Hi pengwinzz3
I have at the moment Maya 8.0 installed on the computer I use.
The file 3DxMaya.mll was found several times:
C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya65_______92 KB________MLL file__________18.09.2006 13:56
C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya6________92 KB________MLL file__________18.09.2006 13:56

C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya8________108 KB________MLL file__________18.09.2006 13:56
C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya85_______196 KB________MLL file__________29.01.2007 10:20
C:\Program Files\Alias\Maya8.0\bin\plug-ins___________________________108 KB________MLL file__________18.09.2006 13:56
Please observe the lines which are referring to a file with the same time stamp AND the same size. It is in the line with Maya8 and the last line. Under such circumstances works a 3d mouse on my system. (I only started 3DxSoftware and I made no changes. The only special thing I did is that I removed completely 3DxSoftware.)
(Sorry, at the moment I can't attach pictures...)

new machine, new problem
I now have a new machine win xp (64 bit this time) running maya 8.5 32bit, when I open Maya I get the following message in the script editor
// Warning: New procedure definition for "runMogrify" has a different argument list and/or return type. //
// Warning: New procedure definition for "trackGenerateLightMaps" has a different argument list and/or return type. //
// Warning: New procedure definition for "runMogrify" has a different argument list and/or return type. //
// Warning: New procedure definition for "trackGenerateLightMaps" has a different argument list and/or return type. //
// Warning: Move Camera //
// Warning: Rotate around focal point! //
// Warning: Fly mode off! //
// Warning: Rotation Scale 1 //
// Warning: Translation Scale 1 //
// Error: Unable to dynamically load : C:/Program Files (x86)/Autodesk/Maya8.5/bin/plug-ins/3DxMaya.mll
//
// Error: //
// Error: (3DxMaya) //
file -f -new;
// ./untitled //
commandPort -securityWarning -name commandportDefault;
It's wierd because if I try to use the spaceball it does respond, but it will only zoom in and out, also I am unable to load 3DxMaya.mll manually from the Plug-in Manager
any ideas?

Hi pengwinzz3
Please check if you have a file:
C:/Program Files (x86)/Autodesk/Maya8.5/bin/plug-ins/3DxMaya.mll
If you haven't any, please try to remove and re-install 3DxSoftware again.
If you have already one, please copy the one you find under:
C:\ Program Files (x86)\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya85
over the existing one. Please post your experience here again.

I didn't have one in that directory, so I uninstalled 3DxSoftware and then reinstalled it, which didn't place 3DxMaya.mll in
C:/Program Files (x86)/Autodesk/Maya8.5/bin/plug-ins/ so I placed one in there manually
unfortunatley it didn't work, I still get:
// Warning: Move Camera //
// Warning: Rotate around focal point! //
// Warning: Fly mode off! //
// Warning: Rotation Scale 1 //
// Warning: Translation Scale 1 //

Maya 8.5 (32 bit) on a 64 bit machine
Hi pengwinzz3
Could you, please, specify whether you have a 64 bit XP or 64 bit Vista on your computer? This is important in order to could reproduce your issue...
Please copy the file 3DxMaya.mll which you find under:
C:\ Program Files (x86)\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya85
into the folder:
C:/Program Files (x86)/Autodesk/Maya8.5/bin/plug-ins/
and share your experience.

it's windows XP 64bit with Maya 8.5 SP1 32bit
I tried what you suggested
when I load maya the script editor now contains:
// Warning: Move Camera //
// Warning: Rotate around focal point! //
// Warning: Fly mode off! //
// Warning: Rotation Scale 1 //
// Warning: Translation Scale 1 //
file -f -new;
// ./untitled //
commandPort -securityWarning -name commandportDefault;
updateRendererUI;
createModelPanelMenu modelPanel1;
createModelPanelMenu modelPanel2;
createModelPanelMenu modelPanel3;
createModelPanelMenu modelPanel4;
buildPanelPopupMenu scriptEditorPanel1;
The viewport will not however respond to the spaceball, when I try and move the spaceball I get this in the script editor:
