SpaceMouse Pro is stealing 2/3 of the GPU power in Solidworks

Post by SW-USER »

We, me and my partner bought us 2 SpaceMouse Pros about 2 years ago and we intended to use them with Solidworks. But to be honest, they work like crap, yea, really crap, So they have spent most of the time in a drawer instead of being used.... It is really a pity as the idea of a 3D mouse is good.

They work great with 3Dconnecxion viewer but in Solidworks it does not work as it should with all kinds of problems. I can see that many people here on this and other forums have similar problems, and that nothing seems to be done about these issues.

And another annoying thing is that SpaceMouse Pro is cutting the graphical performance by 2/3 compared to rotating with the regular mouse. A small assembly rotates at 180-200 fps with a regular mouse and 55-65 fps with the SpaceMouse Pro. Our main assembly rotates at 15 fps with regular mouse but only 3-4 fps with the SpaceMouse Pro. So if one is paying big money for a Quadro P4000, it will perform like an RTX 1050 while using the SpaceMouse Pro.

We have tested on 3 different computers with different old and new drivers and with Quadro P4000, RTX 2070 and RTX 3080, and it proves that it is a problem with these SpaceMouse Pros and not our computer hardwares. And it seems to be confirmed by many other Solidworks users here and on other forums as well.

SO WHY IS NOTHING DONE ABOUT IT??????? If the product has design-flaws, you should admit it and replace them with new ones regardless if within warranty or not. If the problem is on Solidworks side, let us know it then in DETAILS so we can push them.

Every frame displayed needs to be rendered when you're using SpaceMouse Pro in SOLIDWORKS, the fluid 3D design rotation you see or feel in the viewport needs to be at least 24 frames per second like video-watching, so it needs massive GPU computing power to support the display. While when you're using traditional right-hand mouse to drag or rotate the 3D design, the rendering is not continous...

That makes no sense Luping. Both methods should need the same GPU utilization to render the same amount of frames. But SpaceMouse uses only 5-10% of the GPU while mouse rotation utilizes 90-100%. So any larger assembly becomes impossible to manipulate with a SpaceMouse at 1-2 FPS, while the mouse can manipulate the same assembly at 20-25 FPS.

I have seen many SW-users here and on other forums having a lot of problems with the 3Dconnexion's 3D manipulator, some dating back almost a decade ago. And 3DC seems ignore these threads. Probably a well known problem, but on Solidworks' side, and therefor a solution is out of reach for 3DC. But at least, 3DC should have be honest about it and informed the Solidworks community about the compatibility issues. We paid $600-700 for this crap plus around a thousands of dollar of wasted time trying to solve them.
