Surround vision and the Space Navigator

Post by Hypersonic »

I've come across some videos where a 3DMouse is put to good use in surround vision virtual reality. 3DMice are continuous, which is probably one of the reasons this company choose to use it. The Space Navigator is easy to handle from any direction which is probably why they chose that particular model of 3Dmouse. I'm sure they now use the SpaceMouse wireless so they don't run over the cord! The versions with the hand rest can't be easily handled from any direction making it a poor choice in this scenario.

As you can easily swivel your chair around the table there's no need to rotate the view around yourself, rather you rotate yourself around the view. The base of the 3Dmouse is never rotated so if you push it toward a wall you know it will move you toward that wall.

I suppose they could have added rotations of the view by having rotation simply mean rotate the camera and not rotate the wheels of the camera as well, that is if they had control over how the application handles input. It's probably more fun to swivel around though!
