SpaceMouse Enterprise LED control

Post by xanavar »

Center Ring LED
The SpaceMouse has 6 LEDs that provide a smooth blue ring when looking straight down on the device. This is a great marketing view but it is not the user view. While my SpaceMouse is sitting next to my keyboard, 2 of these LEDs are staring me right in the eyes. I can turn these off in settings but this is connected to also turning off the LED indicator for the rotation lock button. :(

I would like to have one or more of the following capabilities:
  • On/off control of the center ring LEDs separated from the rotation lock button LED (that should always function)
  • Dimming control of the center ring LEDs (just like I had with my old SpacePilot)
A more challenging but better design would involve repositioning the center ring LEDs such that they aimed down from a position under the cap rather than aiming up from a position on the board underneath the cap. Then I would enjoy the blue glow, likely even with the current LED brightness.

  • No waiting for the manufacturer to recognize this as an issue
  • No wondering if the hardware could allow a fix with a driver update
  • Cost: Free (I was gifted a remnant at a local yarn store)
  • Time: 20 minutes to fetch supplies + 5 minutes to trim, arrange, and adjust

Clever solution.
It does seem like an error that disabling the LED ring would disable the Rotation Lock LED. That's probably not what was intended.
