Solid Edge Spaceball rotation

i am running solid edge st and using the spaceball 5000 3d controller. from time to time (2-3 times a day) the axis of rotation will invert. i can't figure out what is causing it, but most of the time it can be fixed by holding the ball all the way down in one direction or the other, giving the on-screen part a rapid spin, and quickly releasing it. is there a shortage or cross-wiring in my device? or is this a software issue? is there a way to solve this issue with my current device without getting a new one?
