A problem with a space explorer and solidworks 2009

Hello,

Some of my users use a space explorer for their work in SW2009, most of the mice work, but i've got one that is giving me a headache.
The software will install on the x64 system of one user, including the plugin for SW, but the mouse doesn't do anything at all, except for the blue light, it does work in other applications.
On the other machine, an x86, the software will install everything except the SW plugin, even when i try it in safe mode to be sure there is nothing left running from SW, it gives an error 1603 when trying to install the plugin manually after having ripped it out of the software download.

Any idea's on how i will be able to get the infernal thing running?

just to be sure: did you install the 3DxSoftware after you installed SolidWorks 2009 on the 64bit system? Did you try the "Update Wizard" (3Dconnexion Control Panel -> Tools -> Update Wizard)?

Is the addin loaded? You should have a menu "3Dcontrol"? If this is not the case it might be that you have a 32bit SolidWorks installed on your 64bit system? Please do a "Change" of the 3DxSoftware (Add/Remove Programs) and verify if both versions (x86 + x64) of the SolidWorks plugin are installed. Please let me know if you could figure out.

Concerning your 1603 error please check out our knowledge base. The Windows eventviewer might help you to clarify when the installation fails.

Yes, i've installed the 3dx software after solidworks, as that has been on the pc's for quite a while now.
On the x64 machine both the x86 and x64 addins are installed, the x64 one is loaded into solidworks, the 3d control menu comes up, and under tools\addins it also shows as loaded.
I haven't tried the software update, assuming that the driver i downloaded last week is the most recent one?

As for the 1603 error on the x86 machine, i don't think it's a problem with the registry, as the user has full local admin rights, so he should be able to change the registry.

we just released a new version of 3DxSoftware two days ago. Please give it a try and let us know your findings.

The user might have full local admin rights, yes. We saw that problem anyway sometimes with installations where the user had admin rights. Please check your event log to get more details on the error. Alternatively you could create a log from the installation. See here for instructions. Please make sure you removed any previous installation of 3DxSoftware before you start the new installation with logging. In case you have a logfile please send me a PM and I will give you an email address where you can send this logfile for analysis.

I've installed the new driver 3.8.1, after having deinstalled the previous one, with a reboot in between, the mouse works perfectly in google earth now.
But the bad news is, in solidworks only the buttons work, the joystick doesn't respond to anything, do i need to configure this somewhere?

Dear Riepma,

You will want to double check your settings to make sure you don't have your motions turned off.

In SolidWorks you should find a '3Dcontrol' menu which gives you the option of checking 'translations' off and on, and the option of checking 'rotations' off and on.

In the 3Dconnexion Control Panel, we also have settings to enable and disable motions. Under the 'App Configuration' Tab we have similiar settings as described above and under the 'Advanced Settings' Tab we allow you to tailor individiual motions.

please check if the addin is loaded. You should have a menu item "3D control".

Are you using an antivirus software (which one?)? Please disable it and see if it works now.

I've checked the configuration on the machine, but i can't find the translations and rotations options anywhere, in the 3dcontrol menu in SW there are a few options for the tilting and scrolling, which are checked on, i tried checking the dominant option, which didn't seem to have an effect either.
In the 3dxware panel everything seems to be checked on the advanced tab aswell, both in the solidworks specific menu and in the every application menu.

Could you perhaps post a screenshot of how i will be able to find them?

As for the virusscanner we use symantec, i've tried disabling it, but it didn't really have an effect, and the mouse works fine in google earth with it on aswell, the problem is just locally in solidworks.

Hi Riepma,

you already found the settings in SoldWorks. Bryan was talking about the tilting and scrolling items in the 3Dcontrol menu. If they all are checked thats fine. (Except Dominant)

You could check as well the 3Dconnexion control panel. Look for the 3Dconnexion logo in your system tray and right click to it. Select "Open Window". In the control panel select the tab "App Configuration". Here "Pan/Zoom" and "Tilt/Spin" should be checked. In the tab "Advanced Settings" all boxes should be be checked.

Can you find out if there are settings to make in the virusscanner? Maybe you can enable SolidWorks to not be blocked?
