Inventor Sketch Modes

Post by drguitarum2005 »

I am using Autodesk Inventor 2013 with the latest SpacePilot Pro. I know in the 3DxWare options I can set settings for "Inventor" as well as "AutoCAD" etc. The SpacePilot software somehow knows when I enter "sketch mode" for example, but where can I find options for each of those "subconfigurations"? I'd like it to automatically turn off rotations in sketch mode but keep them on in 3D mode. I do it manually now and sometimes I forget. Surely that's an option somewhere?

Hello drguitarum2005 -

The SpacePilot PRO has a dedicated button to turn rotations on and off. It acts as a toggle so remains in that state in the profile until its pressed again. That allows you to have rotations turned off in sketch mode and available for 3d mode.

The navigation buttons on the SpacePilot PRO are the top buttons on the right side - rotations is the bottom one of the three. You have a visual reminder of the button's on or off state with the icons at the top right of the LCD - the icons switch from red to green when the function is on.

If you were using a device other than the SpacePilot PRO you would turn rotations on and off by mapping that function to one of the buttons on your device.

Thank you for the quick reply. That is the way I am doing it currently but I was wondering if there is a way to do it automatically? The Spacepilot knows when I enter sketch mode, so it'd be nice if it could also know to turn rotations off when I enter sketch mode. Manually sometimes I forget and end up rotating my 2D sketch.

Hello drguitarum2005 -

Used this way, the SpacePilot does turn off rotations when you enter sketch mode.

Turn off rotations in sketch mode then switch to a 3d mode in Inventor or AutoCAD. When you re-open sketch mode you should find your rotations still turned off there - that is saved in your sketch mode profile. You don't need to remember to turn it off - it will stay as you left it.

Does this not match what you are seeing ?

Unfortunately no it is not. I entered sketch mode, the SpacePilot realized I was in 2D Sketch Mode, and I manually turned off rotations by pressing the button on the SpacePilot. I exit sketch mode, the SpacePilot knows I'm back in 3D, but rotations are still turned off unless I press the button manually again.

Hello drguitarum2005 -

I checked with one of our engineers to see what causes that. For Inventor and AutoCAD the 3Dconnexion add-ins save button mapping in the Windows registry - but not the navigation information. I apologize for sending you in the wrong direction here. The add-in provides button mapping only so does not have an option for rotations.
