Space pilot Configurations menu Slow after new driver

Post by pepecrans »

Hi guys

I have a problem which I cant resolve.

I have a Space pilot and am using it with Win Xp SP2 and Solid Edge V19 update 8.
I have installed the newest driver for the space pilot.
I really like the new responsive of the device and the new look and feel of the
wizard.

However I have noticed a drawback. When changing configurations on the pilot the display updates real slow. It takes about 5 sec to refresh the screen!
This is real annoying! :x :x :x

So the question is of course is their a fix for this problem?
I have searched the forum but couldn't find any post with the same issue.

Please help

Space pilot Configurations menu Slow after new driver

Hi pepecrans

Did you notice similar delays with an older (previously installed) 3DxSoftware as well?

The change of the displayed image supposes an information-exchange between the device and the computer via USB. If you have a lot of other USB devices (some of them perhaps even fast devices, such as USB harddisks) then this exchange of information might take some time...

Hi pepecrans,

5 seconds is too much, yes. Check that you have no left logging enabled on the driver. You also check if your anti-virus or firewall software is scanning the USB.

No with the orginal driver the configurations refreshed faster.
I am not exactly sure which driver that is, but it was the one which came with the device in the box

I have checked logging on the control panel but this is turned off
(I assume u mean the function write to log file)

I am not sure what my firewall settings or virus scanner are. But before the driver install everything worked fine so am assuming its the driver

Ok guys

I solved my problem! :D

It wasn't the driver but my USB connection.
I checked my device and how it was connected.

It was connected via my TFT monitor.
I changed the connection to a direct USB port on my PC

PROBLEM SOLVED!
(I hate admit it  but wasn't there something in the manual about connecting the device LOL RTFM!)

However I don't understand why this became apparent with the new driver? :?

Hi pepecrans

It would worth a try to remove 3DxSoftware except the driver (3DxWare) and checking wether it has any influence to the issue you described. You could do that by activating the "Add/Remove Program" Windows utility, selecting 3DxSoftware, clicking on the "Change" key, selecting "Modify" and finally unchecking all the components except 3DxWare. (By removing all the components except 3DxWare you will not have the plug-in in ProENGINEER any more and if you would like to have the plug-in again you will have to install 3DxSoftware for new - by running custom installation and checking all the components you need.)

Please check afterwards if you experience an improvement and post the result again.

Hi pepecrans,

This is really interesting stuff. Problems on the USB are almost impossible to reproduce and we would appreciate very much if you could look deeper into this. For example, try loading an older version of our software and confirm which version makes a difference.

Also, did you have something else connected on the same hub (probably embedded in the monitor)? The slow LCD refresh could be due to contention on the bus due to traffic generated by another device.

O.K. guys I did the following things.

In response to your previous question:There was no other hardware on or attached to the monitor hub. The hub goes directly to the P.C.

I removed all the addins except 3DxWare.
The ones I was running where Plug-in for Acrobat 3d & Add-In for Solid Edge

No noticeable changes (Keep in mind that it works fine after the usb port switch)

I got info on the monitor it was plugged into.
Click here Go to the PDF file its in english

I also changed back to my old port on the monitor with the drivers removed.
To my surprise everything works fine now :? !

I will reboot and test again

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After reboot :
Situtation:
Device plugged in to monitor port.
only 3Dx driver installed
Everything works fine.

Next step
Will try and reinstall Solid Edge Add-in

Result
Successful reinstall of solid edge add-in
tested with Solid edge everything works fine.
I still have my device plugged into the monitor hub :?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next step
Reinstall acrobat plugin

Result
AHA :D
I have reinstalled the acrobat plug-in
And now I have Reproduced my problem
The LCD is refreshing slower. However not as slow as when I had the first problem but it is still noticeable

I will see if removing the plug-in solves my troubles.

Result
Removed the acrobat plug-in
My problem is gone now. So it seems the acrobat plug-in is suspect.

Just to thorough I also changed my port connection of the device.
I am not sure be it seems to refresh a little slower when I switch to a another USB P.C. port.
Could this mean that the device has a "memory" to which port is was installed on first?

I will stop testing for moment.
To give you guys time analyze these results

Hi pepecrans

Thank you for testing, this information could be very valuable...

Did you have eventually a previous release of 3DxSoftware installed?

I think I still have the installation CD laying around.
I will try that driver.

But I will continue testing now.

To keep things clear I will keep updating my previous post with new results.

Hi pepecrans

I didn't want to suggest you to install the old version. Did you install the software from the CD at first an upgraded later? If so, please remove completely the 3DxSoftware and reinstall again the new release. The settings from the old, previously installed release could affect the behaviour of your new installation, that's why I am proposing this workaround.

O.K.

I understand what you mean.

I did install the upgrade over the previous version.
But after testing and removing the acrobat plug-in everything works fine now.
Please note that it seems that the device has a preference for the USB port it was installed on.
