You were right. It was BitDefender causing the problem.
The fix is:
Add the 3dxserv.exe process to Exclusions in BitDefender -> Expert Mode -> Antivirus module -> Advanced Settings.
The 'Advanced Settings' was the bit I missed.
Now SpaceNavigator is running happily.
