CadMouse Pro Wireless Left - so close

Post by freewill-axis »

I appreciate the creation of the CadMouse Pro Wireless Left for us left-handed users in the crowd, but the default button assignment is such a miss of a great opportunity to make an amazing mouse.

From an ambidextrous user's perspective, we care about "primary click" and "secondary click" (and maybe "tertiary click") rather than "left click" and "right click", which is coming very much from a right handed perspective and should be deprecated terminology as of 20 years ago (at least).

Likewise, we'd want "index finger button", "middle finger button", and "ring finger button" or whatever, again making the nomenclature match correctly regardless of which hand is being used.

And lastly, again regardless of which hand is being used, the default mapping should be "index finger button" => "primary click", "middle finger button" => "tertiary click", and "ring finger button" => "secondary click".

However, in typical 3Dconnexion fashion we appear to have a product 90% there that for some asinine reason doesn't go all the way, and the DEFAULT MAPPING OF THE CADMOUSE PRO WIRELESS LEFT is for a right-handed user. What the actual eff?!? I'm pretty sure that if I open this thing up I'm going to find an asymmetrical PCB created for the left mouse chassis, so you had to go out of your way to cock this up.

I don't want to use a Windows/MacOS/whateverOS level setting to swap these buttons, cause guess where that doesn't work? Login screens, bios menus, some elevated/administrative contexts.

Arrrrrgh. I'm so frustrated by your lack of product management at 3Dconnexion. How could this thing have won a bunch of design awards? Oh right, the right handed version won, and you just copied and pasted the kudos to the Left-handed device page. So disappointed. There's a special circle of hell dedicated to right handed product designers who create products for left handed people with no regard to actually using them.

Thanks for considering!

How could this thing have won a bunch of design awards?
Well, this is not pure academic study and evaluation. As for the Red Dot Design Award, iF Design Award, Good Design Award that CadMouse Pro Wireless won, bear in mind that all these organisations are run by for-profit people or companies to award those prizes. The product is designed by for-profit business organisation, the award is given by for-profit business organisations. Take the Red Dot for example, 3Dconnexion paid money to get enlisted in the Red Dot Design Award competition to get the CadMouse Pro Wireless evaluated. The Red Dot Design Award run by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen is actually run by Red Dot GmbH & Co. KG with VAT No. DE 813224777 in Germany by a Hungarian businessman Peter Zec where you can find more information here https://www.red-dot.org/about-red-dot/peter-zec/. There are many companies that want their products to get some sort of 'international' design awards for marketing purpose, the demand is huge and constant, since the product design evaluation processes involve a lot of people, they need to be paid to do the 'professional' job, so the product design award market is born.

By the way, why not send your product improvement request to 3Dconnexion rather than making this complaining? After all, it's a small company, not an all-around big company.
