Issues with Spacenavigator after upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10

Post by oobscure »

Anyone else had issues with Spacenavigator after upgrading to Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 ?

I'm using Spacenavigator on Ubuntu 8.04, and it works fine.
The only application I use it with it's Second Life, so I'm not using the 3dconnexion driver.

Recently, I installed on a secondary partition Ubuntu 8.10, and configured it the usual way, but it looks like something changed or broke. Unlike Ubuntu 8.04, the Spacenavigator is now automatically used to control the desktop cursor - it's basically treated as a mouse.

Any tips?

I'm asking in other forums too, because I think the problem is somewhere in Ubuntu input device management or Xorg, however any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi oobscure,

Ubuntu is not an official supported distribution, thus we have not much experience with Ubuntu. It seems that there is a problem with HID.

Unfortunately we have no solution for now. We will see if we can make some tests and find out what is going wrong. If you get any further information in the meantime please post it here.

Hi oobscure,

some additional information:
  • - when you start our driver the SpaceNavigator will stop moving the cursor.
  • - you can add an entry to your xorg.conf that adds the device as an XInput device and prevents hid from using it as a mouse. A description how to do this is here. Scroll down to the post from January 2nd.

I've tried your suggestion above but I get this in my Xorg.log:

Code: Select all

 (EE) SpaceBall: No Device specified.

Code: Select all

$ /etc/3DxWare/daemon/3dxsrv -d usb -debug -E
3DxWareUNIX = V1.3.0
Device      = SpacePilot
Firmware    = V3.12

$ uname -rm
2.6.24-21-generic x86_64

Ubuntu 8.04.1
Now that I have my fist post out of the way I'll be asking about Blender support in another thread :cry:

This is because the new hotplug support of ubuntu 8.10 lts attempts to add the navigator as a pointing device, subscribe/comment on this bug on launchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/297264
