I'm using SW 2009 and a SpacePilot and regradless off my mapped buttons and alternate config panels it seems to be on a default assembly panel and will not switch to any other.
3Dconnexion driver and software are current.

Open the Jet Demo
Dear SCS,
Open the Jet Demo.
(Start, All Programs, 3Dconnexion, 3Dconnexion 3DxWare, Demos)
What configuration do you have showing in the top title bar on your Space Pilot display?
Sincerely,
Bryan

Different configurations in Different contexts.
Dear SCS,
Well, it does seem as though it will switch to a different configuration when you switch your context.
Configurations are context specific. So each user will have his own set of configurations. Each application will have its own set of configurations and within the more advanced applications you may find a different set of configurations for each mode.
Now when you say it will not switch from default assembly panel, what are you doing that would expect that it would change from default assembly panel?
Sincerely,
Bryan

Hi Bryan,
This is part of a summary I am currently drafting the 3Dconnexion Support Team. This is a fresh Install of 3Dx 3.6.11
Prior to opening SW2009 the Pilots LED display reads as follows.
Header: Any Application
1: Button 1
2: Button 2
3: Button 3
4: Button 4
5: Button 5
6: Translations
After Opening SolidWorks 2009/2008 the Pilots LED display reads as follows.
Header: SolidWorks
1: SW 1
2: SW 2
3: SW 3
4: SW 4
5: SW 5
6: Translations
Additional results/facts:
1. By default the SW install has 2 pre-configured set of keys.
2. If I was to press the 1 button it would initiate the Extrude command in SW...as it should.
3. The same stands true for the other buttons, they all seem to respond correctly to the configured commands regardless that the Pilots LED display does not seem to change.
I had SW2009 open when I opened the "Jet Demo" and the display was as stated. The dispaly looked fine for the Jet demo, but upon closing that a new User config was created "SolidWorks - Keith" and the display read as follows.
Header: SolidWorks - Keith

Keep in mind that by pressing one still initiates the 'Extrude" command

I exited SW2009 and enterd the The 3Dconnexion Control Panel, deleted the "SolidWorks - Keith" that was created. Next reopened SW2009 and a part, then opened the Jet Demo and closed it and the LED stated displaying correctly including creating a new config heading "SolidWorks Part 2". closed SW and reopened fining that the config that I created was now locked on the LED display. I then opened and closed the Jet Demo once again.... this fixed it.
I restarted SW again to see if this was now modal but still found I needed to open and close the Jet Demo to get the LED to display correctly.
I hope this helps...not all of the demo/s seemed to have the same result in restoring the LED display to its configured state.

On futher inspection (and going back to basic math) I'm suspecting a 3rd party addin to SW (HSMworks) and possible the order that the 3Dcontrol and HSMWorks is loaded.
If I go to addin in SW and disable HSMWorks from loading at start up everything to do with the menus on the Pilot's LED display seems to work correctly. At this point start HSMWorks via going to the addin menu everything is still cherry with the LED display.
This is more of a side note; there seems to be a conflict somewhere in referencing the settings for the current user (HSMWorks) and SolidWorks/3Dconnexions referencing the 3Dconnexion Control Panel and application specific Control panel. Not my area.
