SpaceNavigator PE stopped working in 3ds Max 8

Post by KevinThorp »

I'm running 3ds Max 8 on Windows Vista home Premium. I recently bought a SpaceNavigator PE and downloaded/installed the latest drivers.

Initially the SN worked, but the next day it didn't, even though the LEDs are on and I saw the 3dconnexion splash screen when Max loaded.

I tried a number of ideas but the only one that worked was to remove/reinstall 3the dconnexion software. Once again it worked but only for one session. It's dead again.

I've seen this problem posted on this forum, but no resolution.

Kevin

Can you check the Device settings
Suspend Motion: This toggle suspends activity via the controller. When the checkbox is selected, then all motion controller movements are ignored.

Uncheck this option.

Also make sure you are using the current driver from our website.

I went into the 3ds Max 3dxControl menu. "Suspend Motion" is NOT checked.

As I stated in my first message I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers.

The only thing that seems to work is re-install the 3Dconnexion drivers. Then the SpaceNavigator works fine. I can can even close, then reopen 3ds Max and the device remains functional.

However if I restart my computer the SpaceNavigator ceases working in 3ds Max, even though the LEDs come on and the 3Dconnexion splash screen pops up.

Kevin,
There must be something in Vista blocking the device from being detected.
Ive passed your issue on to one of the programmers.
He will check and see if he can find out what it is.

Try checking your firewall settings do any of them monitor USB ports.
Also, when it stops identifying 3dsmax, check the demo is the device still working?

Also check Defender in Vista.

When I go back & forth between the demos & Max the SN works in the demos, but not in Max.

I tried turning off my firewall entirely. No help.

This is addressed to SN users: Are any of you able to use this device with 3ds Max 8 running on Vista?

It seems like a great tool but it looks like I'll have to return it. :(

try the
* Manual Installation
Copy the "3dxstd.dlu" file from "C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion Plug-in for 3ds max"
to the "stdplugs" sub-directory of 3dx max.
Copy "3DxStudio.chm" to the help sub-directory
If you are using 3ds max 5 and higher copy 3DxStudio.ms to the scripts\startup sub-directory.
That's all.

* Loading the plug-in

- First use of the plug-in:
i) In order to use the SpaceMouse/SpaceBall, you must make sure that the driver is running;
ii) Start 3ds max, the plug-in should now be loaded and a banner is displayed.

- Automatic load of the plug-in:
No action is required if 3DxStudio.ms is located in the scripts\startup directory

Hi KevinThorp,
I'm running 3ds Max 8 on Windows Vista home Premium.
According to the information available on Autodesk's web site (see here), it appears that 3ds max 8 and 3ds Max 9 do not support Vista.

You may want to try running both the application and the SN driver (3DxWare, "3dxsrv.exe" executable) as "admin".
