Speed problem in Rhino V5

Post by joohansson »

I have serious problems by using Space Pilot in Rhino 5. It works when you do regular modelling but I guess the way I work is a quite special. I use a plug-in from Pointools where I load huge point clouds (up to 1 billion points) of a very large area, often several hundred meters. I use this for reverse engineering model work. I use "camera mode" with "lock horizon" and everything is OK 50% of the time but when you travel longer distances, for example 10m the space navigator speed changes to approx 10 times faster. That always happens without any warning and the camera end up way out of place and I get disoriented at the same time and must navigate back to previous position. This maybe sounds like a small problem but the thing is I cannot work effienctly. I lose soo much time just to fix the camera each time this happens and i have to select different object to get the normal speed back. Space navigator is the only solution for efficient navigation over large distances in Rhino, there are no alternatives. The space mouse works perfectly in Pointools and FARO Scene for example with same point clouds.

Maybe there is a simple solution to this absolutely unnecessary behaviour? I want a fix constant space mouse speed!

Sorry to neckro this 3 year old thread that never got an answer....but I've been having the same problem forever in Rhino and I want to bring it to the devs attention.

I can tell in Rhino when using the space mouse, the focal point erratically changes its distance from the camera. This wouldn't be an issue except for the fact that the speed of the mouse is related directly to the distance the camera is away from the focal point. So please, find a way to smooth out the focal point shifting. It's super frustrating in what is normally a very intuitive tool.

I will add one caveat, this happens when working in Grasshopper and so I have no native Rhino objects on the screen. So this may have to do with the focal point not having any relation to geometry (in as far as rhino understands it).
