Logitech SetPoint for 3DConnexion?

Post by uGLay »

SetPoint is the best thing ever invented. I have the G5 corded laser precision mouse and I have mapped the buttons to do different things in each program I use here at work.

Is there a program like this for the SpacePilot? If not, why?!?!?!

I would pay up to $5.99 for a program like this. It would make my life much simpler and would definitely increase my productivity.

Hi uGLay,

What is it about SetPoint that you like? Please be very specific.

I took a screenshot of it and circled in red the two things that make Setpoint so great.

I can pick my programs from a drop down list and then assign different functions to each button separately for each program. So if I am in Word, scroll wheel means go up and down but as soon as I alt-tab over to windows media player, scroll wheel works as Forward and Rewind.

Very powerful.

Just to be clear:

It isn't the installation procedure, the look and feel, the font, the colors, etc. that you like about SetPoint.

What you like is the fact that it allows your Logitech mouse to work with every program that you run, by generating keystrokes that you can tune to your liking for each individual program.

You do understand that this isn't going to turn a 2D program into a fully 3D interactive 6DOF program.

You think this would be a powerful addition to the 3Dconnexion driver.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

You are correct. I do not expect my Word documents to start spinning on my screen. I do look forward to using all the buttons on the SpacePilot as much as possible since my hand is on it all day.

Do I sense the first steps towards a universal driver...?

I would seriously pay for this. I don't know how many other people would, but $5.99 x 5470 members of this forum = $32,765.00

Again, just to be clear, you just want to assign application-specific commands to the buttons on the device, not to movements of the 6DOF controller cap. I think you can already do this (see this thread).

too confusing. there's chance for user error on my part.

even so, at the end of the thread you linked, the person is still having problems. it worked but he still has an issue. SetPoint would be win.

LOL at the turn-out of this thread.

- Can we have setpoint?

- tell me why you want setpoint.

- Cause it helps me be more productive.

- It wont make your program 6DOF.

- I know it wont.

- Here is a link, go play "hacker" on your work computer.

Awesome. From what I have seen the whole purpose of this forum is for people to ask for a universal driver and the 3dc people continually deny one.

But but but ... API!!! They have one! It's not their fault that other developers don't bother to write software supporting input devices that only .00001% of people have! I mean, sure, 100% of 3dconnexion's customer base has such devices, but it's not their responsibility to let you scroll through documents with it. They can't just allow it to be set as a mouse wheel in some program!. Every developer in the world has to implement it individually!

what are you talking about man. leave the devs alone. you should go and buy some programming books, read them in your spare time, buy an extra computer you can mess up practicing, try to hack your programs into working the way you want them to.

OH YEAH if after all that you have something that resembles a marketable program, dont you dare release it as freeware or even think of selling it because you are instantly shafting the 3dconnexion programmers who, of course didnt move a finger.

From the discussions and responses I've seen, I really don't understand their stance on releasing drivers that support mouse/joystick functionality in software that doesn't have full support. With the number of requests for it, not being willing to consider the option just feels bizarre.

I'd buy a SpaceExplorer in a heartbeat (even on my meager college student budget) if such functionality were officially available, but as it is I'm on the fence about spending 50 for a SpaceNavigator. I use a SpacePilot at work, which is wonderful, but I don't use enough 3d software at home to make it worth the expense just for that.

Me too. I have a SpaceNavigator and use it in Poser and Sketchup but would love the display and extra buttons of a SpacePilot IF I could also use it any program/game I wanted via a supported universal driver.

Would come in very handy as part of my 'pit setup for Flight Sim but without universal driver support allowing me to map buttons and axis to what I want then it's not going to happen. I.e. potential sales are not happening because of the refusal to develop a universal driver... how's that for a business model!

Where would we be if every application was required to be written specifically to support a standard mouse...
