SpacePilot plugins for Inventor 2k9, AutoCAD 2k9 don't load

Post by Gohybrid »

If i do a clean sweep of all 3dConnexion related software as described in another post, reinstall the latest driver as downloaded from the web site, everything works perfectly.... once.

As soon as I shut down the computer or the driver otherwise stops, the SpacePilot buttons refuse to map or work properly per the active application.

The only way to repair it is to do a clean install.

The only profile I am able to consistently load is the "Any Application" profile.

On occasion, when I load Inventor (or even Solidworks 2008 SP3.1 on another machine), the LCD readout shows the buttons described as INV1, INV2, INV3... or SW1, SW2, SW3. In this case there is some functionality, but it is impossible to tell what the buttons have been programmed to do.

I have sent an email to tech support and have not received any sort of reply whatsoever. I'm hoping to get some support here before I send it back.

In Inventor and Solidworks alike, I have tried combinations of loading programs first, then starting the driver, then activating the plugin.... driver-software-plugin, driver-plugin-software, nothing works.

Please help! This would be a great tool if it work for anything!

Hi Gohybrid,

This is definitely not the normal behaviour. There might be something wrong with your hardware (in which it will need to be replaced).

To verify if that is indeed the case, you can follow this procedure: install the latest version of 3DxSoftware and check that all is working well. Reboot the system and follow the instructions in this Knowledge Base article. If the device is found by Windows, then try running some of the demos (Start menu, Programs, 3Dconnexion, 3Dconexion 3DxWare, Demos). Let us know what is the result.
I have sent an email to tech support and have not received any sort of reply whatsoever.
This is a disappointment. If you can, do send me a private message with the details of that contact (for example, the date and your email address).

Our records indicate that you were contacted on the same day (August 22nd) by one of our US representatives.

My records show no email was received from tech support that day or the next. The only email from 3dconnexion I have is my forum profile activation email. PM has been sent to confirm correct email address is on file.

Pursuant to the original problem - I have followed the directions, I did a fresh install, Inventor and AutoCAD both worked with the SpacePilot for the entire workday.

I rebooted the computer, and indeed the SpacePilot registers in the device manager as HID\VID_046D&PID_C625\7&2BD8B80&0&0000.

The demos appeared to work fine - Puzzle and Jet both caused the LCD readout to indicate mappings for those programs.

However upon launching inventor, the LCD continues to show the "Any Application" mapping. The 3DxInventor toolbar in Inventor has the Button Mapping Editor and Device Settings buttons greyed out. AutoCAD did load its mapping successfully.

So at this point, the only way for me to coax inventor to work again is to close all applications, uninstall 3dxware, reinstall, and reload the apps.

Which version of 3DxSoftware have you got installed? The latest build can be downloaded from here.

in the "About 3DxWare" window as accessed from the 3Dconnexion control panel it reads:

Release Version: 3.6.7
(Driver Version: 6.6.1)
Firmware Version: 4.05
Device Type: SpacePilot

Each time I install, the installer checks for the latest updates and confirms that it is the latest one.

The email was sent to the same address as used to create your account in the Forum. That response was provided on August 22nd.

A copy of that response has been sent by private message.

In your email you wrote you were using Vista:

platform: PC
os: Windows Vista (x86)
os_version:
os_release:
application: SolidWorks Design Solutions
application_release: 2008 SP3.1

If you are running Vista your applications are set to run as administrator.
Also any other device using that application also requires it be run with adminstrator priveledges.

to do this locate the 3dxsrv.exe file:
C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxWare right click on 3dxsrv.exe select properties Choose compatibility.
Select run program as administrator.
click save

From what your describing on the post of performing a clean install it works until you reboot.
This may be caused by a registry cleaning program or Antivirus firewall application that is removing or blocking the plugin from loading the .scg files.

You are correct: you have the latest version installed.

At this stage, I would suggest you to make a clean up of your 3Dconnexion software and reinstall. The procedure is explained in this Knowledge Base article.

I followed the directions to perorm a clean install and the symptoms continue to persist.

I did an experiment where I found out that putting the computer to sleep does not cause plugin failure as shutting the computer down completely does.

What is the next step?

Start IV R2009 and open the "Add-in Manager": check that the "3DxInventor" is loaded and marked to start when the application launches.

If the SpacePilot does not display the assigned commands, try unloading the add-in. Close the add-in manger panel and reopen it. Reload the add-in.

I am using AVG 8 antivirus software. I used the console to disable the loading of the AVG services upon booting, restarted the computer and verified that the antivirus control application and AVG services were not loaded.

Upon launching inventor, the SpacePilot failed to load the plugins properly. I unloaded the add-in, closed the window, reloaded the add-in, closed the window and still no luck.

The email I wrote earlier was regarding a Vista system with SWx3.1. Just to be clear, the Inventor/AutoCAD system is XP64.

For whatever it's worth, something about my windows user profile prevents Inventor from running (which occurred virtually at random from the day that I took the computer out of the box), so Inventor must be run as a different user with full administrative privileges.

AutoCAD however has not needed to be run as a different user. It seems to be working fine today.

I will uninstall/reinstall the 3dxware today so I can work. What's next?

Not really. We're preparing a new update to the 3DxSoftware package that includes a new revision of the Inventor plug-in.

I not think it addresses the issue that you're reporting but it would still make sense to try it.

I suspect your issue is having Inventor running as a different "user". In the task manager panel, is the process "3dxsrv.exe" (the 3DxWare driver process) assigned to the same user as "inventor.exe". This may cause problems when both processes want to communicated between each other.

If the processes are running as different users, try -- for testing purposes -- to login as a user with the necessary permissions to run Inventor. Let us know what happens.
