drifting with spaceball 5000 usb in inventor 10

Im experiencing a strange drifting/cogging effect with my spaceball 5000 in inventor 10, windows sp3. With my hand off and after calibrating it in 3Dxware 3.6.11, the models jump in small increments in a clockwise rotation. The firmware of the spaceball is 3.02 if that makes any difference. This makes it really tough to work with 2d sketches, any light anyone can shed on this would be greatly appreciated!
