SpaceNavigator orbit centers

Post by RonnyM82 »

I read somewhere prior to puchasing my navigator this week that you could choose between rotating the camera around the object (so the rotation center is somewhere inside what you are looking at) and rotating the object around the camera. The concept of rotating the object around the center of the camera would allow you to move through pipes etc.. or in my recent application, zoon through a grille in a box and then rotate to look around the inside of the box. in the default setup it seems this isn't possible.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use 3ds max with SpacePilot (but I expect it to be similar for your situation). Pressing the Panel button, i get to at setup where "Center of rotation" can be set to either Camera/View, Focal Point or Scene/Object.

I currently have a hardware problem, but hope this might help you.

One of the main reasons i bought my space navigator was for the ability to move around 3D space in ways that aren't possible with a normal mouse. One of the things that i read was the ability to get into or move through tight areas that would have been very difficult to achieve with normal commands via a standard mouse. However, it appears all the SN is doing is calling up the standard inventor view commands. Which means i can't rotate about the camera, and when i am in a tight space and i try to rotate the view to see an area of interest the model ends up rotating right over the area i am trying to look at, obviously this wouldn't happen if the view rotated about the camera. There is a function with the steering wheel that allows you to pick the view center, can the add in tap into this in future releases, and get it to lock onto the camera at all times? Since at this stage i'm a bit annoyed that this wasn't made clear on the 3D connexion website i certainly won't be purchasing a space pilot until this is fixed. Would greatly appreciate it if someone from 3DConnexion might be able to shed some light on this issue.

cheers in advance

I've heard that there is some support for this in Inventor 2010. I haven't seen it nor know how it works.
