I work for a Visual Effects company that runs their software over their Ethernet, so I don't have maya installed locally at my machine, although I have the /My Documents/Maya etc... folders for 2009 & 2010 etc... the 3DX installer fails to see this as a valid install, as it won't put the driver in there, and allow me to source the mel scrips. So I can't use the Controller at work, which is what it was purchased for.
I know this must all sounds sketchy, but trust me if I had a illegitimate copy at work, it'd be installed locally. This allows the company to purchase licenses for the license server and recycle them when not in use, and unify the tools architecture, and I haven't seen many places do it like this, it's like a network license server, with a network install that actually works.
So my problem is I haven't been able to find the files to download and install manually, so does that mean, I have to try and install it in another location, and then install the drivers, and then hack them out of the directory for me to get this thing working ?
Why can't the installer be pointed at the executable, and then ask where I'd like to install the files to ? Or point me to a link that has a zip archive of the latest drivers, and I'll install them from there ? I can load my own plugins, and scripts from my user folder, so that shouldn't be an issue...
Maya Manual Install

Really ?
So there's no answer to this ?
I have done some more digging and asking questions of IT personnel here and it seems for our customized pipe, we have here, we have to launch a shell (CMD) and then type a command that sets our Maya / Max / Nuke / Houdini environment up based on our Role, which also loads any role specific plugins, shelves and other things that even change from show to show...
Due to this non-standard install, I have tried to install the plugin from the shell once the environment had been set, thinking that that had something to do with it, but it still doesn't work.
So I had someone install maya locally for other reasons than 3DConnexion, and it turns out our Maya is in a strange folder C:\Program Files\Autodesk\maya\2009p02\bin\
I believe that the 2009p02 is a folder that designates which patch we're running but could also screw up the install program.
Could someone please "Un-Paperweight" my 3D Connexion Mouse for me ?

3Dx Maya Plugin Manual Installation
Hello DCrosby -
If your 3D mouse is installed and working outside of Maya [in the Jet Demo for instance] , you can use these steps for a manual install of the Maya plugin:
1.Locate the 3dx plugin file 3DxMaya.mll for Maya 2009 [default path is C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya32\win32\Maya2009 ] and copy it to your Maya "bin\plug-ins" directory. For a 64-bit PC, substitute 3DxMaya64 in the path.
2. Copy the melscripts from C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya32\scripts to the "scripts\startup" sub-directory of Maya
3. Copy the bitmap files from C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya32\icons to to the Maya "icons" directory
4. Copy the 3DxHelp directory from C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya32\3DxHelp to the Maya "docs\ext" directory
Restart Maya. The usersetup.mel file loads the command MagellanStartup. As long as the 3Dconnexion driver is running, the MagellanStartup command enables 3Dnavigation . If the 3Dnavigation does not auto-start, you can type MagellanStartup at the Maya command prompt.
You can find a screenshot of the 3Dx Maya Control Panel in the manual.
