hardware rotation issue, space explorer usb

I have a problem with rotating the device clockwise, counterclockwise produces a smooth pan, but clockwise is glitchy and jumpy, quite unuseable. Movement in all other axis is fine. I have tested my system with a colleagues space explorer and it works fine, so this strikes me as being a hardware rather than a software issue.

Specs: spaceexplorer usb, software rel. 3.12.3 firmware 4.04 Windows Vista 64bit SP2, 3D Studio Max 2010 x64 SP1
