Middle Mouse Axis Pivot Point Change? (3DS Max - SpacePilot)

Post by H8Cr1me »

In a previous version of the software I used to be able to change the pivot point (indicated by the tiny blue cross), using the middle-mouse-wheel click. It was EXTREMELY useful. This no longer seems to be the case. It will only try to pivot around selected objects or where i focus my viewport (and that doesn't work properly all the time).

I haven't found allow for the pivot point to be manually changed in the control panel. Is there a way to enable this feature?

Middle Mouse Axis Pivot Point Change? (3DS Max - SpacePilot)

Hello H8Cr1me -

In 3DsMax the rotation center options are now located on the 3Dx PopUp menu. The pop-up is mapped to the Panel button on the SpacePilot.

You can find a screenshot of this in the manual. [Start, Programs,3Dconnexion,Documentation - Manuals - English Manual - Supported Applications - Autodesk 3ds Max]

The Menu/Panel button on the left side of my SpacePilot brings up the 3Dconnexion Properties window, and NOT the 3ds Max Pop-Up Menu

Alright I figured out how to map the Application Panel to the Menu button. However, none of the options in the Application panel allow me to manually place the pivot point with the mouse-wheel click. Could you tell me how this is done or did you guys "fix" it and remove an awesome feature?

Middle Mouse Axis Pivot Point Change?

Hello H8Cr1me -

In Object and Target Camera Mode "Use Selected Item" makes only your selected point the center of rotation. In "Camera Mode" the rotation center is always your point of view.

When "Auto" is checked and the complete scene is in view, the scene's center of volume is used as rotation point. If you move closer, the center of rotation will move closer to the center of the view. To avoid this behavior , uncheck Auto and leave "Use Selected Item" checked.

While we usually do not recommend older drivers, if you find that you do prefer the behavior of a previous version they are available by checking 'Also show archived software'. You can use the Clean Install steps to remove all of the components of the current driver first.

I appreciate your assistance. If you could tell me which version of the drivers had that feature that would be helpful.

I just have to state that I don't understand the reason for removing the middle-mouse click feature. it was great. To be honest, control in 3DS Max can be pretty squirrelly at times. When you go from manipulating the pivot options in the pop-up panel, movement is unpredictable. The nicest part of the middle-mouse feature was that even if movement got disorienting you could quickly hit the middle mouse button to anchor your pivot. I used it instinctively.

On an unrelated note, movement in autoCAD (any version right up to 2011) 2D is completely unstable and will most likely cause the program to crash. I would never use a 3D mouse in autocad but switching between 3DS Max, if you bump the mouse it can crash CAD and possibly crash 3DS as well. And from what I have read lately is that 3DConnexion has been integrated into CAD 2011 and can no longer be disabled...You guys just keep "fixing" stuff.
