Set Rotate Point in NX4

Post by jwade »

My old SpaceWare had a function in the button mapper allowing me to set the rotation point and have it automatically adjust to the window center point.

Now I'm running 3DxWare 3.5.6 with a SpacePilot and can find no similar function.

Anyone?

That wouldn't be a function of SpaceWare, it would be a function of NX. If the functionality is still in NX, then you will be able to activate it via a 3DxWare/3DxNX/SpacePilot button. Do you remember which button it was?

NX4 has a "set rotate point" function but it only reacts to mouse inputs. The SpaceWare had access to a separate function called "set attetion point" that somehow controlled the rotation inputs to NX4. On the SpaceWare driver it's listed as an "application function" (meaning an NX4 function) assignable to any button, defaulted to button 7.

When I go into the button mapper for the 3DxWare, I can't find this similar function.

Try this: assign "Button 7" to a SP button... OH, you can't with 3DxNX!
OK, change the configuration to "Any Application" in the 3DxWare GUI, then assign "Button 7" to some random SP button and see if it activates "Set Attention Point".

I can't do that anyway. I'm using the new SpacePilot...which I just got. There is not button 7.

If you load the "Any Application" config you will find many "Buttons" in the 3DxWare GUI combobox for each hardware button. Normally you would assign "Button 1" to the button labeled 1 on your SpacePilot. But you can also assign any other button to it. In effect, rearranging the buttons. This allows you to activate Button 7 even though you don't have a physical button 7.

Hi jwade,

Update: I don't think you don't need to use the old "button 7" trick. I think we've exposed that functionality through the toolbar.
To set the rotation point, simply press the 'Set Rotate Point' on the 3DxNX toolbar and then select a point on the object.
To reset the rotate point to the screen center press the 'Clear Rotate Point' on the 3DxNX toolbar.

To make the toolbar visible right click in the toolbar area and check '3DxNX'

Alternatively, right click in the view window and click on 'Set Rotate Point'
To clear the rotation point, right click in the view window and click on 'Clear Rotate Point'.

Or use the shortcuts Ctrl+F2 and Ctrl+F3

Solution found

Post by jwade »

I was away from UG for quite some time the last few years, and now that I'm back on it, I have since found a solution to this issue.

My company has set the Customer default item

Code: Select all

title="Rotate About Attention Point" value="1"
which defaults the system to ignore the 3DxWare set rotate point function. You must go in and change the value to "2" or adjust the value through the "Utilities --> Customer Defaults --> General --> 3D Input Device tab."

This has been bugging me for years because everyone who has a problem with it complains about it, and everyone else says it works, but I can't find anywhere that anyone has answered this question.

After fixing this, NX will allow the center of the screen to become your default rotate point, and you can set any point by clicking the "set rotate point" button in the 3DxWare toolbar, or by right clicking in the graphics pane.

There is an explanation on this in the customer defaults documentation.
