Bought a new space navigator and NX5 will not recognize it.
It's working in windows as confirmed with the demos, and the NX icons have been put in place inside NX, but the device does not work inside NX.
This is a Windows 7 64 bit system.

Try returning the SpaceNavigator to NX defaults. With NX open and having the SpaceNavigator focus [NX-profilename will be shown at the top of the 3Dconnexion Control Panel] choose "Restore all Defaults"[3Dconnexion Control Panel – Options- Restore all Defaults]
The 3Dconnexion Control Panel [3Dconnexion Properties] opens from the system tray icon or the 3DMousehome Properties link or from the 3Dconnexion folder on the Start menu.
A dialog box will say that restoring defaults will remove all changes you have made to the configuration - confirm to restore defaults then check whether that restores navigation in NX.
This will correct any changes that may have been made to the NX profile. As long as the SpaceNavigator is working in the demos, nothing else is needed for it to work inside NX. The 3DxNX add-in provides the button mapping editor inside NX but is not needed for NX navigation.
If you are not seeing navigation with a specific NX document, try it with a different document or open a new document.
With the NX default settings the left SpaceNavigator button is mapped to the left SpaceNavigator button. Using the current software - Release 3.15.2 - you should see the 3DMouseNews window when NX opens. The left button opens the menu shown there.

I worked at it some more. Uninstalled everything, re-installed.
No luck. The left button does not produce the menu as shown in the Mouse News either.
However the right button does open the app.
Could there be a conflict with the mouse I'm using inside NX? Currently I can rotate the part with the center button on the mouse, and possibly NX is looking at that as my rotation over the space navigator?

If I look at the spacenavigator in the device settings, Windows is using its own driver for it. Does this seem right? Under the properties the system does not know anything about the device, not the manufacturer, model number, nor description.
I have downloaded the drivers off your site and installed the software.

What you are seeing in Device Manager is correct. The SpaceNavigator is identified in Windows7 by a 'Hardware ID' on the Details tab as shown here.
As long as the Space Navigator is working in the demos as your is, it would be correctly identified.
If you installed the software initially from a CD, it is possible the update did not complete correctly.You can use the clean install steps to resolve any issues that may be coming from a previous installation. It sounds like you may be seeing the older 3DxNX toolbar rather than the pop-up menu that is part of the current software and the clean install would be the best way to resolve that.
When you return to the default NX settings, you can look at the button mapping tab in the 3Dconnexion Properties to verify that it is set to the pop-up menu. There is a separate editor inside the application under 'Customize buttons' for mapping inside NX.
One other area to consider is permissions. While 'Run as administrator' is not generally required for the 3Dconnexion software, it can be needed if your application was installed as administrator.
The Space Navigator is designed to be used alongside a standard mouse - it is correct that you would be able to rotate with the mouse and is not an indication of a problem. NX makes the 3D navigation part of the application. That should be working even if the 3DxNX add-in were not installed. Since the navigation is not working , it is the type of problem that would be corrected by the clean install .

With Windows7 we often need to create an exception for the driver [3dxsrv.exe] in the firewall and other security software.
Are you having a problem starting the driver ? When the driver starts a 3Dconnexion icon shows up in the system tray and you can use the SpaceNavigator in the installed demos [Start-All Programs- 3Dconnexion- Demos- Jet demo]
