Mudbox SDK in development

No release date yet, but development kit for high-end sculpting tool is in alpha

Mudbox 2009 - the first release of the 3D sculpting tool since it was acquired by Autodesk - isn't out yet but co-creator Dave Cardwell is already looking to the future, including the release of a full SDK for the high-end CG sculpting tool.

"There are areas we're working on that we weren't able to get around to, just because of time," he recently told Develop.

"There's a lot more coming from Mudbox over the coming months."

Key among these is ensuring the extensibility of the package, which was originally developed while Cardwell, together with co-founders Andrew Camenisch and Tibor Madjar, was working with Weta Digital in New Zealand. Since the October 2007 acquisition, they've been located in Autodesk's Toronto office, alongside the Maya development team.

"Everything we do with Mudbox is born out of working in a production setting," added Cardwell.

"All the features we add are to solve production problems, and knowing how companies have their own custom ways of doing things, one of the features we've worked tremendously hard on is a full SDK."

Still in what he calls "an alpha setting", it will soon be released to some select clients to iron out the bugs, before it's made more widely available.

Cardwell won't be draw on when this will happen however, so for now we'll have be to be contend in the knowledge that Mudbox 2009 will be released on October 6th.
does this development get us any closer to 3dconexxion support with Mudbox?

Yea, me too. It would be sooooo nice to have my Explorer work with Mudbox for both PC and MAC!

I'd like to see it a priority. Mudbox is part of the Maya Unlimited package!

I too am anxiously awaiting support for Mudbox 2009. I wrote an email to Autodesk about it (not that I'm expecting much to come from that), but I really would like to see the support for Mudbox happen (sooner than later).

Has anyone in here tried doing some kind of workaround thing with that SpaceNavigator Keyboard/Mouse/Joystick driver with Mudbox?

Seriously though... this seems like such a huge oversight, Mudbox is so ultimately well suited for a device like this. Combined with my Wacom tablet, it would me an amazing experience and would totally improve my productivity (not that it's bad now, but it could be better with some Mudbox support from 3DConnexion.

Since Mudbox and Maya share the same style of control, is it possible to create some kind of a workaround with that driver?

As stated in other post.

"3Dconnexion would like to have support for much more applications. But you will have to contact the editor of the software, as 3Dconnexion doesn't have access to proprietary code, and ask for integrating support. We have a SDK which every software developer can download (free of charge) and which allows the support integration in proprietary software."

Is this the current state of this? I can't believe there's no support for mudbox, but for every other autodesk app? Mudbox is like the app it would be the most useful in...I can't understand why they would be holding it up?

Encourage Your Mudbox Developers

Post by Bryan »

Dear chimera15,

We'd love to have Mudbox support our device.

If you know of, or can imagine ways, to make use of our input devices, that would be beneficial in Mudbox, we encourage you to let the Mudbox's developers or their marketing department know of this added value. Encourage them to make the changes to their user inteface that you would find valuable. Encourage them to make these changes in their next developement cycle

We provide a free SDK, Software Development Kit, for developers to make it as easy as possible for them to include use of our input devices in their user interfaces. We welcome and encourage application developers to take advantage of the input from our devices to enhance their user interfaces.

Sincerely,
Bryan

It's autodesk, every other autodesk product pretty much that I know of has 3dconnexion support, it's not like they're some small company that doesn't have the time or doesn't see the potential...why not mudbox?

Yes, it's all Autodesk, but each product is developed by different groups, in different locations, with different schedules. Give them time :) (And give them encouragement if you are a existing user!)
