3DS Max 2012 Perspective Window

Post by nehumanuscrede »

I'm a long time user of 3dconnexion products ( my previous one being the SpaceBall 5000 usb ) and recently acquired two new devices as my original SpaceBall is no longer driver supported for the more recent versions of the software I use.

That said, I've run into a peculiar issue within 3DS Max 2012 concerning major lag in the perspective window. This impacts both the Space Navigator and SpaceMouse Pro devices I have. Both are running the latest drivers and the problem isn't consistent for some reason. It also is present across two different computers ( one is a laptop ( Vista 64-bit), the other a desktop (Win-7 Ultimate 64-bit ).

The scene isn't particularly complex. 1000 frames in length, two actors in it. Less than 30K polygons in it. No textures.

Top, Front and Left viewports have no issues. I can pan and zoom in them as expected. The Perspective viewport, however, has a 4-5 second lag between the time I move the controller and the time the movement begins in the window. Again, this is not consistent so I'm unable to pin down the culprit here.

No lag issues noted at all if I shift the standard Max keys to move the camera about. Works as expected.

I'm assuming something in the scene isn't playing nice, but it seems odd the external controller is the only one that has issues with it while the keyboard keys do not.

Thoughts ?

It's gotta be something with the timeline I'm thinking.

I opened the scene fresh and set my timeline to display 0-1000 and have no issues. If I set the timeline to display say 600-1000 instead, all of a sudden the lag / delay issue pops up. Is odd.

After further playing with this, I can say the 3dconnexion device works with no issues as long as the timeline slider is sitting at zero.
( I use both a SpaceMouse Pro and a Space Navigator ) *This also assumes you have keyframes in place along the timeline.*

The moment the timeline slider moves off zero, the delay / lag begins. The more keyframes you have, the longer the delay. No keyframes = no delay.

I have not tested this in other 3D applications yet. Though I will test with Softimage later tonight if I remember to do so.
