Unable to uninstall and/or upgrade

Post by Kleanthis »

Hello;

I have a SpaceNavigator that appears to works fine, on a Windows 8 x64 system.

I am trying to upgrade the driver. When I go to install the latest version, I get a message that I need to uninstall the previous version. When I go to uninstall the previous version via Control Panel/Uninstall I get this great message and it fails.

I looked into the FAQ about a clean install but that also starts by doing an uninstall which I can't perform. This is my current driver info:

What can I do at this point?

Hi Kleanthis,

first try a repair of the existing driver installation. Then uninstall it and install the latest version. Let me know if this solves the issue.

Thank you for the reply UtaSH. When I run the Update Wizard, first I am told there is an update. Then when I continue to goes through the paces and seems to finish OK. However I get the same message when I go to Uninstall from the Control Panel.

Hi Kleanthis -

An error when trying to uninstall from Control Panel | Program and Features means that part of the uninstall information is not available. First stop the driver [Start, All Programs, 3Dconnexion, Driver, Stop Driver] then do the clean install manually . Complete the second part of Step 2 by removing the 3Dconnexion folder in C:\Program Files.

Save the driver from the downloads page to your PC then run it after the clean install with applications closed.

Hi Barbara, this is getting really bizarre. I followed the steps and have removed DLLs (both x32 and x64), removed the application data, and the mentioned registry entries. When I go to install the driver 3DxWare64_v10-0-22_r1746.exe, I get a message that 10.0.22 is already installed and I need to unistall it.

Hi Kleanthis -

It sounds like there is still a leftover component - that can happen when the installer is not able to complete.

Check both C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files [x86] to make sure the 3Dconnexion folder is gone , check both registry locations again then restart the PC. Now you should be able to run the 3DxWare10 installer.

Hi Barbara;

As it turns out, the installer checks in other places as well. I was certain the registry keys mentioned in the clean install instructions as well as the program data was gone from the computer. I was still getting the same message. The installer must also check the uninstall keys. Obviously in my case that entry wasn't gone since I manually deleted the files. So after removing the registry keys for the entry on the control panel/uninstall, finally the installer decided to go ahead.

The plot thickens however. What is error 1001?

After seeing this, I am asked if I want to continue or not. If I say yes, it goes on perfectly fine it seems, and it installs all the plugins, but the actual driver is not installed it seems, so the plugins do nothing.

Hello Kleanthis -

Error 1001 means the installer is not finding .NET Framework installation.

Open the Control Panel -Programs and Features, click "Turn Windows features on or off" on the panel's left-hand side. Check the .NET Framework option to enable it .

I'm sorry the install has been so troublesome - it should be able to complete now once it finds .NET Framework.

Hi Kleanthis -

The one that is important to the 3Dconnexion software is .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) . Enabling that gets rid of the Error 1001.

Hi Barbara;

I enabled the all the options for .NET 3.5 (although, according to this KB article are not required for non .NET development http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library ... .110).aspx).

I see see the same 1001 error. It happens right after the windows shell it's refreshed and cmd dialog flashes on the screen for a split second.

Any other ideas on what can be done here?

I've installed 3.17.8 which went on without a problem so that I can at least use the device. However, I can't use it in applications like 3ds Max 2015 (works fine in 2014 of course).

Is there something that can be done in that regard so I can at least use space navigator in 2015? I know there is a .dlu and script that is needed. Could I at least obtain those and would the drivers that come with 3.17.8 work with those?

3ds Max Autodesk, Inc. 9 - 2014 is the currently supported applications the programmers have not released an add-in that supports 2015.
Isn't 2015 a Beta if so we usually do not support Beta software.

Hi Fred; I appreciate you trying to help, but no, 3ds Max, Maya, Alias 2015 et al, are not beta anymore. And most certainly 3DxWare 10.0.22 supports 3ds Max 2015, Maya 2015 etc.

I have found a solution to the installation of 3DxWare 10.0.22 and for anyone else running into the same problem: Run the installer as Administrator. That did the trick for me. Previous driver installers e.g. 3DxSoftware64_v3-17-8_r1730.exe do not require Admin rights to work.

Best regards

Hi Kleanthis,

I am glad you found out what was the issue with the installation of 3DxWare 10.0.22 on your machine. This version includes support for 3dsmax 2015 beta, Maya 2015 beta and Softimage 2015 beta.
