Latest drivers not recognizing 3ds Max

Post by odd_enough »

Finally posting this issue since I'm having the problem with two separate computers. I am currently needing to use an older driver for now because the latest 10.0.22 drivers will not recognize both 3ds Max 2014 or 2015 with my SpaceNavigator. It recognizes and works with other programs such as FireFox, Maya, Mudbox, PhotoShop, etc, but not 3ds Max. I am getting the same results on my home computer as well as my work computer. Is this a known issue, and is there anything you suggest I try? Would like to be able to use Max 2015 with my 3D mouse (seeing as the old drivers won't work with 2015).

The 3DxWare 10.0.22 driver includes the add-ins for 3DsMax2015 beta, Maya 2015 beta and Softimage 2015 beta. 3DxWare 10 was released first for the SpaceMouse Wireless and Space Navigator but will recognize any of the current 3Dconnexion devices.

Choose SpaceMouse Wireless or Space Navigator on the downloads page to display the 3DxWare 10 for Windows driver.

The 3DxSoftware driver needs to be uninstalled before installing 3DxWare 10 for Windows. 3DsMax needs to be closed while uninstalling | installing. If 3DsMax is using elevated permissions, the same permissions are needed for 3Dconnexion [right-click | Run as administrator]. Standard permissions are recommended for both whenever possible.

Standard 3.17.8 driver has not been updated to include support for Max 2015.

Alright, so further testing and following the instructions you posted. Current findings:

Uninstalled older drivers, restarted computer, installed 10.0.22 drivers, made sure 3DxStudio.ms was installed to \Autodesk\3ds Max 2015\scripts\Startup and 3dxstd.dlu was installed to \Autodesk\3ds Max 2015\stdplugs, first tried starting each in administrator mode, but no luck. Closed out max and killed all 3dx processes. Started both in standard permissions mode, but same results. The drivers would not recognize 3ds Max. Tried this above process with both 3ds Max 2014 and 2015.

If it's any help, I am using Windows 8.1. Again, it recognizes other software, but not Max. I checked the 3DsMax.xml file and couldn't find anything that it would indicate that it shouldn't work.

You have the files in the correct path.
On a 64-bit PC:

Copy the "3dxstd.dlu" file from C:-->Program Files-->3Dconnexion-->3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware-->3DxStudio64-->x64 -->3DsMax2015 to the "stdplugs" sub-directory of 3Ds Max.

Copy "3DxStudio.ms" from C:-->Program Files-->3Dconnexion-->3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware-->3DxStudio64 to the scriptsstartup sub-directory of 3Ds Max.

This add-in was tested for the Beta other users reported it is working for them. Our standard driver 3.17.8 should work with no issue for 3DSMax 2014. But you lose firefox support.
Sorry I do not have Win 8 to see if I can duplicate this issue.
The programmers are out of office for the Holidays when they return maybe they'll have a fix or additional suggestions.

While you have a 3dsmax file open, Open our control panel. Does it say 3dsmax or something else?

Copied those files over just in case. As for your question, if I have all other programs closed, run the drivers, then run Max, the control panel says "No supported application selected". If I load up Maya, it automatically changes to reflect "Maya". (just checked that it works for Maya in both admin and standard modes).

I honestly can't think of much else to troubleshoot at the moment, so I will wait for your programmers to get to it. It's not an urgent matter right now as I'm still able to get work done in Max 2014 with the older drivers.

I greatly appreciate your help with this, Fred.

Success, uninstalled drivers, installed 10.0.22 drivers. Performance seems choppy. I'll try to figure it out.

I tried a few more tests over the weekend with a couple of my friend's computers (all Windows 8), but with the exact same results. Getting worried that it might be an issue with my 3D mouse itself, but there shouldn't be any reason for that. I will need to find a Windows 7 computer to see if it works there.

Performance is better, Roll axis is inoperative and the control properties utility is glitchy.

So it seems any Windows 8 pc I try the 10.0.22 drivers on won't recognize 3ds Max, but the one Windows 7 pc I tried did work. Can anyone else reproduce this issue?

Hi all,

have you had one of the beta versions of 3DxWare 10 installed previously?

In case there is a configuration file left from a beta version problems can occur. Please follow the instructions in our FAQ #1100.

Let me know if this solves the issue.
