Buttons on SpaceMouse Wireless

Hi, I am looking at getting a SpaceMouse Wireless but wanted to first get some information on the two programmable buttons on the sides. I saw from the website that clicking these buttons opens up an on-screen menu from which I can further select one of four functions.

My question is: can I simply program these buttons to function as either of the SHIFT, CTRL or ALT keys?

My target environment is 3ds max 2014/2015.

Yes, you should be able to use the GUI to do this.
