New user, and some issues...

Post by FoxyRick »

I've had my wireless spacemouse for nearly two weeks now - it's great, despite what follows. I use it on Second Life although at some point it'll see some serious 3D software use too.

I am on Windows 7 x64 and have driver 3DxWare64_v10-0-22_r1746. I got the spacemouse working in SL by creating a config file for it; simple enough and it works perfectly except when the issues below rear their heads.

Can anyone offer help with the following issues please?

First issue: When used wirelessly, the response in SL is erratic to say the best.

It works fine (except see below) when plugged in so it's not the configuration. When connected wirelessly it seems to work at first. At some point though (after minutes to half an hour) the response to whatever I'm doing in SL just becomes slow, jerky and erratic and then seems to get locked in one direction as if I'm constantly just pushing that way. I'm not of course. This only happens when connected wirelessly.

The only fix for this is to power cycle the spacemouse. Then it will work again, for a little while... Eventually I just gave up trying to use it wirelessly and now have it plugged in all the time. Rather annoying as I deliberately bought the more expensive wireless version to get rid of the wires on my desktop.

Second issue: If I have Firefox or Excel open on my second monitor but have the SL window active, pressing the buttons on the spacemouse gives the 'no supported application selected' window. I got around this by removing the profile files for Firefox and Excel, but that means then that the spacemouse won't work in those at all. It's either that, or I can;t have those apps open at the same time as SL - that's not an option. Without those configs present, the buttons work as I want in SL (left button toggles flycam for instance).

Surely I should be able to have configs for different programs that are open, and only the active application should interact with the spacemouse?

Third issue: When the PC is first powered up and going into SL, pressing the spacemouse buttons brings up the 'no supported application' message just like above, even though SL is the only running application. The fix for this is to unplug the USB lead to the spacemouse and plug it back in. then it works properly (buttons do what I want) without the unsupported message popping up. Doing this (crawling under my desk to get to the USB ports at the back) every time I restart my PC is getting tiresome though. Since wireless doesn't work either...

Fourth issue: The blue LED's won't turn off, even when I untick the LED's Active setting in the TNA icon popup (I assume that's what it's for). They're a bit bright... is there a way to turn them off?

Rick,

Secondlife added support natively in their software. It is there control panel that controls our device.

When you setup the profile did you use these instructions from the Second life Wiki site.

The instructions below look like they disabled our driver and use there own built in driver..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nathan Zetkin - Space Mouse wireless - 3DxWare v10.0.19 - Windows 7 64 bit
(with much thanks to Zion Tristan)

Use Zion's instructions below to begin:

In Windows, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management. Select the Device Manager from the left pane, and then choose the Human Interface Devices and check to see if you have a device called 3Dconnexion KMJ Emulator. You may or may not be able to disable this device (Properties > Driver > Disable), but disable it if you can. Additionally, find a HID-compliant device, HID-compliant game controller, or HID-compliant consumer control device, and check the Hardware ID (Properties > Details > Hardware IDs), looking for HID\3DXKMJ_HIDMINI&Col03 as the topmost value. When you find the device, disable it from the Driver tab.

Editing the config file:

In the folder C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3DxWare\3DxWinCore64\Cfg, you will find a file called joystick.xml. Copy it and rename the new file to SecondLifeViewer.xml. I use a free xml editor to edit xml files but just about any text editor should work. I made the following changes so that the top part looks like this:
<AppCfg Default="true" xmlns="" CfgFormatVersion="1.0" ThisFileVersion="1.0"> <AppInfo> <Name>Second Life</Name> <VersionRange> <Min>1.0</Min> <Max>1.0</Max> </VersionRange> <ExecutableName>SecondLifeViewer.exe</ExecutableName> <ApplicationIcon>SecondLifeViewer.ico</ApplicationIcon>
Save the file and run Second Life.

Changing Second Life preferences:

Go to Preferences->Move & View->Other Devices. You should see at the top, that the Enable Joystick: SpaceMouse Wireless is checked. The other parameters are set as shown below:
Avatar Build Flycam
X Scale 0.50 0.30 8.00
Y Scale 0.50 0.30 8.00
Z Scale 0.50 0.30 8.00
Pitch Scale 0.50 0.30 2.00
Yaw Scale 4.00 0.30 2.00
Roll Scale 0.30 0.30
I check the box Auto Level and leave Direct Zoom and 3D Cursor unchecked. For Control Modes, I leave Build unchecked and Avatar and Flycam checked.

Yes, those are the instructions I followed, after finding that the spacemouse didn't work at all in my SL viewer, either SL's own or firestorm.

Before doing that, there was simply no response to the spacemouse. I did, of course, tick the box in the viewer preferences to enable the joystick/spacemouse, and set spacenavigator defaults. I tried a few things but nothing worked until I found the mentioned instructions.

On a related note, I did come across a comment (here or on SL's forum, I'm not sure) that the issue was caused by the viewer only recognising the first spacemouse driver it found; I think it uses two drivers...? Hence disabling one of them so the second could then be 'found' by the SL viewer. Not sure about all of that, except that things suddenly worked (mostly) after disabling the driver and making the profile.
