SpaceNavigator Calibration Issue

Post by Jaschndlr »

I recently bought a SpaceNavigator PE, but I am having trouble getting it calibrated. I don't get any errors on startup and the lights come on, but it constantly causes my parts (Autodesk Inventor) to rotate, pan down, and zoom in. When I try to use the device I can slow those motions down, but not stop or reverse them. I have tried using Calibrate from the control panel GUI, but this has no effect. I also ran some of the demos that came with the driver package, and I see the same results with them. This device was new out of the box, and I am using the latest drivers.

Any idea whats going on here?

Help

Post by Jaschndlr »

Maybe I need to clarify?

Whenever the Navigator is plugged in and the driver is "started" the object (be it an Inventor Part, Google Earth, or one of the 3Dx demos) spins, pans, and zooms uncontrollably even though I'm not even touching the device. When I DO manipulate the Navigator it will affect the motion of the object, but not enough to give me any level of control.

I have tried the "Calibrate" function of the control panel GUI, uninstalling and reinstalling, reboots, and changing USB ports, but none of that has changed anything.

I am hoping that all I need is a firmware upgrade?

Any help would be appreciated. I used one of these at a training class last week and loved it. I set up and installed that one myself and had no trouble at all. I bought this unit so that I could demo it for my bosses and make the case that all of our design engineers should have one, but so far all I've got is a fancy paperweight.

Thanks.

I know this is an answer to an very old question, but I have been searching on the net for ages, and this thread is the only one that comes up with the same problem. At least this now shows up in google for the people having the same problem!

Anyhow; I have a simple Spacenavigator, +/- 5 years old and didn't use it for 3 to 4 years. It has been sitting in a box for that time, but now I started it to use it, I had to calibrate it every 10 minutes, sometimes 10 times after each other to keep it 'neutral'. However, sometimes the drift was really bad, sometimes very small but still significant;most of the times it would just keep drifting/tilting/rotating

Anyhow, I saw the regedit hack for 3dxware to adjust the deadband, but didn't really help and is just a bandaid.

However, turning of the blue LED lights in my navigator works! I suspect that the rubber sleeve (I took it apart to see if there is any dust) got a little hole in it where the blue light influences the positioning system of the navigator (sensors work based on light).

So if you need to recalibrate often, it sometimes works etc etc, try to turn off the blue lights and if that doesn't work, try to use it in a dark room; that way you at least exlude ambient light is not affecting the sensor inside it.
