A lot of questions about SpaceNavigator...

Post by Jack Insomniac »

Hi, I'm a student at ASU taking a class in video game design. The class is to get our feet wet with the design programs and be able to turn out a successful mod at the end of the 6 week program.

I have a few questions about the SpaceNavigator. First, I don't see anywhere where it says if it support Unreal Engine. The video shows and describes "flying through virtual worlds" as I would need when designing a level in the Unreal Editor or playtesting it. If I purchased the SpaceNavigator, could I use it to navigate Unreal Editor and Unreal Tournament 2K4?

Does the SpaceNavigator's controller cap rotate? I couldn't find anything anywhere that said this... is this a 5-Axis controller, or 6-Axis?

Do I need a SE or PE? I will be using this product for academic and personal uses, but if I want to publish a mod I make online for free?

Is it Plug and Play? I'm sure it isn't, but some who has it can you tell me, is do I simply need to install a driver, or is there a whole program running it in the background? This is important for me, because there's a limit to what I can install on school computers.

Hello Jack Insomniac,

Unless someone has modified the Unreal Engine, it probably doesn't support any 3Dx devices. If you can develop plugins for the engine, you can probably still get to the device events and use the device yourself through standard windows calls.

The SN cap translates and rotates in 3 axes. It is a full 6 DOF device.

The Personal Edition is intended for students. That is all you need. ($59 or better prices are available on the net)

The device is plug-n-play with the Windows O/S. If you want to use one of our drivers, those need to be installed. You may have a problem doing that on a University machine. You can instead use RawInput or HID directly from the OS. We have posted examples of doing each of these. Those don't require are driver, but also don't take advantage of them (no GUI). The driver and SDK are free anyway, but it is a question of being able to install them.
