Greetings All,
After a successful install of the drivers for SpaceNavigator PE on my Vista machine, I had everything working fine in Photoshop CS2, Google Earth, even the ESRI ArcGIS software --- and then SpaceNavigator just stopped working. Systems says drivers cannot be found and the Control panel does not show up in system tray and will not launch with the desktop icon. Tried uninstall/reinstall with latest drivers but to no avail.
The ESRI Plug-in was newly released, and I'm thinking it was after that install that things may have gone downhill. Tried getting rid of that before reinstalling as well, but no change. Any thoughts?

Hello Caretaker,
Here is a list of things to try:
Full uninstall and reinstall process for Windows XP, Windows XP 64, Windows Vista 32 and Vista 64:
Before proceeding make sure they or their IT administrator are logged in with full admin privileges.
1) Download the latest driver from the 3DConnexion website and save it to an easy to access location such as the desktop.
2) Uninstall the current driver through the Add/Remove programs. Then make sure the 3DConnexion folder in C:\Program Files is deleted and purged from the Recycle Bin.
3) Navigate to C:/Documents and Settings/your profile/Application Data or C:/Documents and Settings/admin/Application Data/ and delete the 3DConnexion folder there and be sure that it is also purged from the Recycle Bin. Check both locations to be sure.
NOTE: on Vista machines the paths to the profiles will be found in C:/Users/your profile/AppData or C:/Users/admin/AppData/.
4) Under the 'Start' button and 'Run' type in 'regedit' and hit OK to bring up the Registry Editor. It is strongly recommended that a backup of the registry be made first by right clicking on the My Computer icon in the left panel of the Registry Editor and selecting 'export'. Title it something like Registry Backup and point it to an easy to access location like the desktop. Once the backup is complete there are 2 registry entries to remove:

Fred,
Thanks for all the help but it still won't install correctly. Ran through the process several times but the control panel will not launch and the Navigator is not recognized. Tried the device on an XP machine and it works fine. I've had so many incompatibility issues with Vista over the past 6 months that I'm pretty much convinced it something specific to the OS. Vista: the biggest purchasing mistake I've ever made.
Like I said, the product seems fine. I may just go and buy a copy of XP and start from scratch.
Thanks again for all your help.

Caretaker,
One more thing to try:
By default Vista does not allow programs to run with administrator rights. Which means any program that interfaces with it must also have the same privileges. This can be assigned by editing the properties for 3dxsrv.exe:
click start
programs
go to the startup folder
right click on Start 3dxware.exe
select properties
click on Compatibility
locate Priveledge level
click on Run this program as Administrator.
To disable the nagging warning box about "running with administrator privileges" follow these instructions.

Still Trying
Fred,
I actually got the Navigator to light up once somehow, but then made the mistake of moving the connector to a different USB port -- am now back to the original problem of it not being recognized the and control panel not launching or showing up in the Tray.
Got you latest message after that and did as you suggested. Unfortunately, the option check box to Run as Administrator is grayed out so I can't make the change. Not sure it that helps or hurts you effort at diagnosing the problem. In any event, it is all appreciated.

Saga continues
I've finally manage to get SpaceNavigator stabilized on Vista -- after downloading the latest drivers -- but I keep getting a message saying the OS cannot locate the drivers even though the mouse is lit up and working. In Vista I have three option with this warning message: 1) try to find driver - which it never can; 2) ask me again later - which it will any way; 3) always ignore problem for this device -- if chosen, SpaceNavigator will stop functioning and I'll have to uninstall/reinstall. I can keep things working but every time the machine reboots I get the same message.
At the very least, perhaps this is something to consider for the next version of the Vista drivers.
