poor performance with sketchup on ATI FireGL V8600

Post by strategis »

Hello,

I've been using the SN for nearly a year. Mainly for creating and editing large SU-models (cities and buildings). Things work just fine on my 1th PC (asus P5W with nividia 8800 GTX), both with SU5 and SU6.

On my new PC however things are bad. I especially bought a professional graphics card (ATI FireGL V8600), on a Asus P5E mobo. This card rocks (specViewperf 10 Maya score of 312). But not in SU6 in combination with the SN. Especially when i choose the option 'auto center of rotation' there is a considerable lag, and the model freezes every 2 seconds, often it remains frozen. Also selecting and moving around isn't as fluent as it should. In SU5 things are better, but not optimal. The 8800 GTX is much more satisfactory then the ATI Fire.

I tried calibrating and such, without effect.

Is this a SN-issue? (it could also be a SU-issue, or a ATI-hardware issue), and if yes, what can be done about it?. I read something about poor performance with large models in SU, but since the 8800 GTX doesn't have the problem, it might be something else.

Greetings,

Hi strategis,

Do you see any degradation in performance using the normal mouse? Is the movement as fluid in the new PC as the older one when using the normal mouse?

Helle Ngomes. Performance is also degraded when only using the mouse. Switching to auto center of rotation however further decreases the performance.
I removed the plugin completely, and performance was poor. So it seems to be a general sketchup or driver problem and not a 3Dxware-problem. I noticed (in RivaTuner) that the OpenGL Installable client Driver was not installed. Maybe this has something to do with it.

Thanks, Strategis

Hi strategis,

It seems that you're running SketchUp without hardware accelerated 3D graphics.

Let us know what you find.

somehow the fresh install of the ati drivers didn't install the opengl installable client driver. So I installed some older drivers first. This resulted in the ICD being installed properly. Then I installed the newer drivers, and the ICD remained installed: Problem solved.

SU is running very smooth, and the 3dfx plugin functions without a glitch,

Thanks,
