Im using MAX 8 and MAX 2008. Everytime I launch the driver my +/- and 2D key looses its mapping which I am doing in the Control panel with a Custom function.
I have to add a scale function to the - key, because for some very strange reason 3D connexion felt that scale was not required next to move/rotate...?? In any case each time I load the driver(even when I Save As.. the profile manually), I have to remap. Am I doing something wrong? Solution?
Thanks. Im getting addicted as I get used to the device.

Space Explorer +/- and 2D key mapping
Moderator: Moderators
The settings are mapped to 3D Studio MAX -wsheper (my user).
I have also tried saving as another configuration file, and the same results occur. -- I must map those three keys every time I restart MAX.. the other keys and sensitivity settings retain all changes and custom functions.
I have tried resetting to defaults, and ensuring my software is up-to-date and validated.
I notice in the "Button Editor..." window from the 3Dx Control strip that those three keys are NOT included. Could this be an issue?
Is that 3Dx Control/Button Editor... there to give you access to functions in MAX or the native software that would not be accessable with a hotkey (ie. a Custom Function)?
Also when I launch Maya 8.5 it doesnt work at all. Im going to remove/reboot/reinstall and report back.
Any help is appriciated.

Willshep,
Here are the instructions for button mapping in 3ds max:
The 3Dconnexion panel is accessible from the utilities tab (hammer icon). Click on 3DxStudio to access the plug-in options: Control Panel & Button Mapping Editor.
To map a 3ds max or 3Dconnexion defined function to a motion controller button, first click on Command Category. Note: The 3DxStudio category contains commands that are specific to the 3Dconnexion motion controller. Once the command category is selected, the list of available commands is displayed. Select the command of interest by clicking on that command with the left mouse button.
Once selected the command can be mapped to a button via one of three methods:
Press and hold the left mouse button on the command. Then drag that command to the text box associated with the button number in the column to the right. Once over the text box, release the mouse button and automatically that function is mapped to that button on the controller.
With the command selected, press and release the right mouse button. An "Assign To" menu appears. Move the mouse over to the menu and select button assignment.
With the command selected, move the mouse to the Button Mapping column, identify a button, and then right click over the text to the button number. Select Assign here to assign the selected command to that button.

Chris,
Thank you for pasting the instructions on how to map buttons, however this is not my problem.
As stated earlier, the + and - and 2D key DO NOT appear in the "Button Mapping Editor" like they appear in the "Control Panel" (the MAIN 3DX control panel, not the thin vertical strip one).
Because of this, it would seem im not going to be able to retain mapping on those keys between sessions.
BTW, after getting the mouse working in maya 8.5 (I figured out how to copy over the magellan.mel and create a shelf button -- very annoying this does not work after install) I find that the mapping from the MAIN control panel DOES work, and DOES retain the mapping between sessions. Unfourtunately I suffer from the same MAYA framerate drop as being discussed in another post.
Clearly this is an issue with MAX, and should be addressed.

under normal condition you should only use the Button Editor for Max to configure your buttons.
The "-","+" and some other buttons are not meant to be changed - so if you want to bind some special functions you will have to use one of the 15 other buttons.
About Maya frame rate: What CPU do you use and do you also notice the frame rate-drop in an empty scene?

One of the other 11 mappable buttons you mean as +, -, 2D, and Panel are all unmappable between driver sessions.. And the other 11 buttons are pretty essential. Advertising 16 mappable buttons and actually offering 11 is unfortunate... especially when it actually works in MAYA (using the control panel applet).. seems like it could be added as a fix in an upcoming patch. To use this device effectively you need to really get your left hand off the keyboard.
It is very unfortunate Scale and Undo did not get onto the device. ESC is easy enough to replace with Undo, but adding Scale now means removing another essential button. Anyways, I digress.
As for the maya information, im going to respond to the correct post with all my information you've asked for from previous posters in the "bad framerate" posting. Im also experiencing poor performance in MAX with very few polygons (like a biped).. and when your zoomed on an object the rotation rate becomes PAINFULLY slow. But ill tackle the maya issue since it already has such a following.
thanks for the help!

MAX sluggishness
While zooming does effect the camera "roll" speed, and other movements in general... I noticed on my Control Panel "strip" (in-program ctl panel) that the sensitivity there was low.
So that has resolved some of the sluggishness.. however I need to continually adjust that depending on my level of zoom.
