Go to add remove programs
Choose 3dconnexion
Select change
Choose modify,
Make sure the 3dxviewer is selected.
finish installation.

I tried the method you mentioned and with the new driver it seems to have got it working!

Does this mean older versions will not work like before?

Hi Steeve_Hardings,

Support for Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1 (all editions) was added in 3DxSoftware v. 3.6.

Using earlier versions of 3DxSoftware in XP SP3 is not a supported configuration.
