spaceball 5000 and 3dsmax

Post by chimera15 »

I have an old serial spaceball 5000 I want to use on an xp machine. I know the support has ended, but I want to use it with 3dsmax on that machine. The standard driver doesn't seem to come bundled with the 3dsmax driver? I need a special one? Anyone know where to get it?

I know there is one, I've seen it on a site that talks about the 5000, and I remember using that driver with my spacenavigator before the function was bundled with the standard driver.

Yeah Ok, I verified. I need the 3dsmax plugin for the spaceball 5000. I've done a forum search, couldn't find it, maybe I'm not searching for the right thing. It doesn't appear to be in the driver section anymore.

I know it exists. There's a website about it here:

Nevermind. I got it working perfectly with the copy trick with the newer driver.

Copied the 3dxstd.dlu from a machine installed with the newer driver to the right folders in the 3dsmax std plugin folder and it's working like a charm.

Pretty awesome to get this old thing working on a pretty nice machine. Should give me some great functionality for $30, vs the new ones that cost $100+.

I have a related question, I use a SNavigator at work with Max 2012 and Inventor. Looking to use the same software at home to assit in Open Uni engineering degree.

So the point, the missus won't let me splash the £83 for an education SN, so the only real alternative I have is one of the many SBall 5000 USB's available on ebay.

Assuming I can get it running on (go on guess!) .....win7 64bit with the vista 64bit driver, how well does the older driver play with newer software ipdates like Max 2012 and the latest inventor?

Any help appreciated, I have to do something been using these for so many years now CAD with just a mouse is like having your left arm cut off (or right :D)

As is always the way, I always seem to find the answers on forums "after" I have posted doh.

The way I read it is that the SB is support only on the older driver sets and its only newer sets that support max 2012 etc directly, which kind of leaves me stuffed. no matter theres always a way.

like not telling the missus how much it costs and then changeing the online banking password for a week or two.
