Update of Drivers Install Issue

Post by pjam73 »

Hi, I have recently downloaded the latest drivers for
Spacepilot Pro & Notebook navigator thingy

I have a constant error message of 1618 every time I have tried to install.

As per instructions regarding install, have uninstalled everything 3d connexion related, cleared the registry, switched off Security programs and still cannot install !

Operating system - Win 7 (64bit)

Help would be appreciated !!!

Hi pjam73,

Error 1618 indicates that first installation is already under way and must be completed before another is begun.

Have you tried rebooting your system? That ought to clear the first installation (if it happens to be hanging).

This issue may be caused by a corrupt registry key or system file. We can try to take the following suggestions to troubleshoot this issue.

Suggestion 1: Rename Windows Installer InProgress file

======================================

1. Click Start, type regedit in search bar, and then press Enter.

2. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress .

3. Click the InProgress subkey and note the name of the file listed on the right side for the database path. This file should have a .msi or .ipi extension.

4. Rename InProgress to OldProgress .

5. Close Registry Editor.

6. Locate the C:\Windows\Installer folder.

7. Rename the file listed in step 3.

8. Restart the computer, and then try the installation again.

Hi Fred,

Had a look for the subkey as described above, and it doesn't exist

Hello pjam73 -

The registry key in Fred's steps should only present when an install is 'in progress' - it should be cleared at the end of an install. If the installer does not clear that key, with the next software installation there is an Error 1618 telling you another installation is in progress. That is why we first check this registry key and clear it if it is present.

An 'Installation in progress' error that persists after reboot when the 'in progress' registry key is not present indicates that the Windows Installer service not responding correctly. To correct it you can manually stop the service, reboot then restart it.

To open Services you can type services.msc in the Win7 search box or right-click on Computer and select Manage - Services and Applications - Services. Choose Windows Installer in the list and select Properties. Change the Startup type to "Disabled", click OK, and reboot. Once the computer reboots, open Services again, go back to Windows Installer Properties, and change the Startup type back to Manual.

The error is caused by the Windows Installer not closing properly after your last software installation. Usually the 'Stop' button for the service is greyed out. By disabling the service, then returning the startup type to Manual the service will be available for installations and no longer complain about a non-existent install in progress.

Hello pjam73 -

You mentioned that you downloaded drivers for the SpacePilotPRO and SpaceNavigator for Notebooks. If they will be used on the same PC, you will need only the SpacePilotPRO driver - it includes the software for the SpaceNavigator for Notebooks. The driver should be downloaded - saved to your PC - rather than run from the web site.

There is one other step that can correct problems with the Windows installer - renaming the InstallShield folder.

1. In Windows Explorer or in My Computer, open the following folder:
C: \Program Files\Common Files\
2. Right-click the InstallShield folder, and then choose Rename.
3. Type InstallShieldOld, and then press ENTER.
4. Right-click the C:\ drive choose Properties - click DiskCleanup and select Temporary File to let Windows clean the temp folder
5. Reboot and run the installation.

If the error occurs, check the processes running in the Task Manager for a second instance of msiexec.exe running? Are there instances of setup.exe or setup.msi running ?

If you still are not able to complete the installation, please contact our Technical Supportand refer to your forum post.
