At times, I can get the most simple of objects to rotate and then it freezes. Other times, I can get nothing to move.
I have a rather powerful computer with a ton of memory and vid memory. I have the latest 3dconnexion driver (just wiped it clean and downloaded the latest) and the latest GPU driver. I run Win 7 64bit. I run BitDefender Antivirus Plus 2012 and have added scanning exceptions to the 3dconnexion folder.
I am running no add-ins except 3dconnexion.
I do find this to be possibly be of interest. When I click to activate another program such as IE, I can rotate my parts freely. As soon as I click on Inventor to select a feature, the rotation lags or just stops. It doesn't matter what other software I click on, this happens consistently. This even holds true if i open the clock settings on the Window.
Any help would be appreciated,

I'm pleased you found a solution. The clean install steps work because they return all of the settings to defaults - to the way it worked when you first installed it.
Inventor is an application where the 3D navigation has been added inside the application. The 3DxInventor add-in provides only the Inventor button mapping.
If the navigation should develop a problem in the future, it can often be corrected just by restoring Inventor defaults from the 3Dconnexion Properties window using Options- Restore all Defaults. Make sure Inventor is the active profile - it will be listed at the top of the window as Inventor - username. A dialog box will report that restoring defaults will remove all changes you have made to the configuration - confirm to restore defaults then check whether that restores full navigation.

I'm having exactly the same problem with one difference: it does not go away with a clean install. I tried almost all drivers available for download. For the latest beta-10-something the "window in front" trick is not working [if I remember correctly...] but initial performance is a bit better, although still unusable. The only workaround is to use one of the prod. drivers and bring some window to the front if 3D manipulation is needed...
OS is Windows Vista 32-bit SP2. No other inventor add-ins, just installed the "3d-mouse-crash-hotfix" from autodesk. Restoring defaults does not help. Calibration only helps until the next click in inventor. Calibration does not help at all for the beta-10. The supplied 3D puzzle is working as expected.

Plug our devices in directly to a usb port, using hubs, extension adapters, monitor usb ports may not provide enough power to run the device correctly.
Other tips to try:
Software that scans USB ports can block the 3Dconnexion software. It is best to exclude the USB port used by your device from being scanned if possible rather than creating a software exception.
To add 3dxsrv.exe permission to the Windows firewall :
1. Open the Control Panel (All Items View).
2. Click on the Windows Firewall icon.
3. Click on the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link in the left blue pane.
4. Navigate to C:|Program Files|3Dconnexion|3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware|3DxWare|3dxsrv.exe
[On a 64-bit PC the folder is 3DxWare64]
Other firewalls have similar settings to identify 3dxsrv.exe as an allowed program. You will need to find the settings in your security applications for 'exceptions' or 'exclusions'. Perhaps i should mention that I run the whole stuff inside vmware fusion 4.1.1. I found an earlier post that describes the same problem with ProE under vmware 3:

I don't have the firewall activated and don't have any anti-virus-software running [at least none that i know of...]. Since I'm tired of searching a solution I installed a small clock app called TimeLeft that floats on top. I click whenever I want to manipulate the 3d view. It would be much better if one of the buttons could be configured to bring focus to a small floating window. In the Inventor add-in button config there is 'launch app 2', which launches the calculator. Can I configure what it launches? And if so, how can I prevent launching multiple instances of the same app ?

Sorry, we donot support VMWare. I have no answer as to why inventor will freeze. It is probably due to network speed.

btw, I can't imagine it has something to do with network speed because it works perfectly if another apps window is in front of inventor.
