3D mice for scrubbing - video & audio

Post by maschl »

Hey there,

I was wondering if anyoney else would be interested in scrubbing functions. I'm considering either getting a 3D mouse BT or some sort of Loupedeck with jog wheel for Audio & Video production. Ideally the 3D mouse as a real allrounder.

Can the drivers be programmed to support this functions?

Scrubbing functionality would be an awesome addition, particularly for audio and video. A 3D mouse as a multi-functional pliable tool is promising. With proper driver enablement or programmed mappings, it could provide silky jog control—something definitely worth trying out to improve precision and speed in production workflows!

it is possible via xml editing to assign arrow keys to one the axis. It works fairly well, even with acceleration (the more you rotate, the faster the arrow key commands get repeated -> faster scrubbing). However, the video editing software has to be in focus, and it can even lead to problems by sending too many key commands when the software is not responsive enough while rendering noise reduction for example. Therefore I would not recommend a 3dx device only for scrubbing. rather as an added bonus.

Logitech has some new modular controllers, one of them with a wheel. That might be a better option, but I don't have one to know more.

For DaVinci Resolve, the Editor Keyboard or the Speed Editor is recommended. The wheel has inertia, and makes scrolling a real pleasure. However, these work only in Resolve, but they also work when Resolve is not in focus. For audio there are Mackie protocol MIDI controllers with wheels. Depending on the DAW these wheels work quite good.

15 years ago I only had the 3dx SpacePilot and SpaceNavigator, and used them for scrolling all programs. But since my video and audio work has become more serious, dedicated and specialised controllers make more sense.
