You can use 3DxWare 10 (in beta) to make more general use of your SN.

Hello George -

The X-Mouse software has options for a standard mouse and does not recognize a 3d device like the Space Navigator. It would not affect the behavior of your Space Navigator or the Space Navigator buttons.

The only place where we have occasionally seen an error with standard mouse software is with the kind of .dll error discusssed in this thread .

When we do see this kind of .dll conflict, it can generally be corrected by turning off the other software temporarily and running the 3Dconnexion installer again.

Other than that , software for the 2d mouse and software for the 3d mouse should be able to run at the same time without issues.
