Outrageous RAM usage for a driver

Post by greyerlynx »

Hey, I just received my SpaceNavigator. I have have been looking forward to this device for a long time and only just got up enough reason and money to make the purchase. I love how it works, I'm mostly using it in Sketchup2013 and it works great.

The problem I'm having is that something called 3DxRadialMenu is using 1.22 GB of ram now that I've installed the drivers. On my new iMac with 32 GB it's not really a problem but on my Retina 13" with only 8 GB that's a pretty significant chunk of memory, particularly when the device is not connected.

Is 3DxRadialMenu the driver or is it an optional add-on related to the SpaceNavigator? I've yet to encounter a "Radial Menu" while using the space navigator in Sketchup. If this really requires 1.22 GB in order to get the 3D mouse functions to work I may have to reconsider... I don't think even the wacom drivers take up that much space and they're doing a TON more in terms of functionality.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi greyerlynx,

The "3DxRadialMenu.app" is a program that we're working on to support yet-to-released 3Dconnexion products. We're sorry for the inconvenience the program may be causing you. We're addressing that issue now.

Okay, so for now if I kill that process it won't effect the function of my space navigator?

I also use a SpaceNavigator and was a bit shocked to see that 3DxRadialMenu process weighing in at so much. I am also baffled by 3DxVirtualLCD and 3DxVirtualNumpad (though their process footprints are not so insane). These seem not to provide any functionality to the SpaceNavigator device I own whatsoever, but I find no way to configure what runs at start up.

Could you please provide an explanation for why they are started for a device that does not use them? And could you please provide instructions for how to configure which "3D" drivers do run at start up? Thank you.

Hi PGodfrey,

We plan to optimise the set of helper programs that our driver launches. The "3DxVirtualLCD.app" does not apply to the SN but 3DxWare 10 will work with any number of device connected of whatever type. We agree that the helper should only launched if it can be used by a program.

The 3DxVirtualNumpad helper is the implementation of the function "Virtual Numpad": a panel that you can use for quick number input. To open the panel assign the "3D mouse" function "Virtual Numpad" to a button.
