Alt + something, will it work?

Post by Shrike025 »

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a 3d mouse, but I'm affraid that this few programmable keys it provide won't be enough for me. I just want to make sure: is it possible to press two keys at the same time eg. Alt + any other programmable key (on SpaceMouse, or Pilot)? In that case key "1" could be something and Alt + "1" something else - the number of combinations is growing fast.

Hello Shrike025 -

Yes ,the ALT button on a device can be used as you would use the ALT button on your keyboard - as a part of a key combination.

A key combination like ALT + [key] or CTRL + ALT = [key] can be mapped to the programmable buttons. Adding another modifier at the same time - whether it is pressed from a keyboard or a 3d device - generates a different command - as long as your application is set up to understand both key combinations as commands.

To further extend button functionality , our new 3DxWare drivers allow radial menus to be programmed to device buttons. Each radial menu has 4 sections - like a pie graph - and each section can be mapped to a different command or keyboard shortcut.

The SpacePilot is a legacy device. See here. But you can try the driver for the SpaceMouse Pro. It includes support for SolidWorks 2014 and should support the SpacePilot, too.

Note that the last driver to include certified (i.e. tested) support for SpacePilot was 3.16.3 (released on 28th March 2013).
SpacePilot may work with future drivers but it is not certified (i.e. tested).
