Spacepilot slow response times in Hypermesh v9.0

Post by biohzrd »

My Specs:
ATI FirePro v8700, Driver:FirePro_v8700_8.603_XP32_79796.exe
Spacepilot, Driver: 3.7.16
OS: Windows XP Pro
Computer: Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz, 3GB RAM

I have been using 3D connexion devices for a while now. Currently I'm using the Spacepilot alongside of Hypermesh v9.0 and v10.0 . Both versions rotate/move very cleanly using my regular mouse and the built-in keyboard shortcuts.
In simple models without surface meshing elements everything runs fine both with the keyboard/mouse and the spacepilot.

However, when I add surface meshing elements up to around 2 million+, the Spacepilot rotations are very jerky and not fluid in the least bit. The keyboard/mouse combination still works very fluidly.

My graphics card is a brand new ATI FirePro v8700 with the latest drivers, so I am sure that is not the limiting issue. It appears that the way 3dConnexion talks with Hypermesh is inefficient and the high element count pushes this issue forward.

Is there a fix to this stuttering problem?

Hi biohzrd,

I am afraid you need to address this issue with the manufacturer of Hypermesh, with Altair. The support for the 3D mouse was implemented by Altair; we have no access to the sources. Please contact Altair and let us know what you learn.

Thank you for the quick response. I have sent a report to Altair.

I don't think it is your app. I have the exact problem in Max2010 and I have a FireGL V8600. Maybe it's the card but I don't think so. These are hot cards with lots of memory. Your card has 2GB to my 1GB.

I have a file with 240,000 faces and 460 objects. It rotates just fine with the mouse but the Space Pilot won't rotate at all. It's like it's frozen. If I isolate just a few objects it will rotate them but it's jerky.

Hi RobH,

Which 3Dconnexion Software version do you use? The latest?

Yes, I believe so. When I open the 'Control Panel' it reports:

Release Version 3.7.12
(Driver Version: 6.7.11)
Firmware Version: 3.12
Device Type: SpacePilot (we know this already)

Actually, I just checked. Apparently 3.7.18 was released 'Today.' I'll update and see if it helps.
